India AI Jobs Report 2026

AI hiring is the fastest-growing part of India's job market, while general IT hiring has gone flat. This report pulls together the year's major hiring studies so students, freshers and working professionals can see where the jobs are, what they pay, and what employers now expect.

3.8 LakhAI roles projected in India for 2026 (foundit)
59.5%Growth in AI engineering job postings, fastest among major markets (LinkedIn)
5.1 Lakh+GCC hiring expected to cross in 2026 (foundit)

AI hiring keeps rising while IT stays flat

India recorded about 2.9 lakh AI job roles in 2025, and foundit projects close to 3.8 lakh in 2026. LinkedIn's 2026 AI labour market data shows AI engineering postings in India up 59.5% year on year, the fastest of any major country. Hyderabad and Vijayawada are growing even faster than Bengaluru in percentage terms.

The contrast with general tech hiring is sharp. NASSCOM's 2026 strategic review says the tech workforce grew only about 2.3% in FY26. In June 2026, Naukri found AI hiring inside IT companies up 16% even as overall IT hiring fell 3%. Companies are still spending on talent, but they are spending it on AI and data skills.

Global capability centres (GCCs), the India offices of global banks, retailers and tech firms, are a big part of this. foundit expects GCC hiring to cross 5.1 lakh jobs in 2026, and says nearly two in three new GCC roles need AI, data science or automation skills.

02 · The Talent Gap

Plenty of jobs, too few people ready for them

NASSCOM-linked estimates put India's AI talent need at 12.5 lakh professionals by 2027, roughly double today's pool of 6 to 6.5 lakh. A Parliamentary Standing Committee report in March 2026 warned that demand is rising faster than supply, especially for ML specialists and data professionals.

Quess's 2026 analysis counted about 9.2 lakh AI-skilled professionals, but only 2.57 lakh in core AI roles. Most people are using AI inside existing jobs in testing, analytics, development and operations. Employers are hiring AI-fluent people into normal roles almost as often as they hire dedicated AI specialists.

What this means for you

You do not need to become an "AI researcher" to benefit. A tester who can build AI-assisted automation, or an analyst who can use GenAI tools on real business data, is exactly the hybrid profile the market is short of.

Share of AI-tagged job openings · CBRE, Dec 2025 listings

Bengaluru 25.4%
Delhi-NCR 24.8%
Mumbai 19.2%
Hyderabad 12.5%
Pune 9.6%
Chennai 6.4%
Kolkata 2.1%

NCR's AI demand is broader than IT services alone. It comes from consulting, fintech, healthcare and public-sector projects, and in NCR the largest share of AI postings sits in data science and analytics. For students in Noida, Delhi, Gurugram and Ghaziabad, that is the most direct route into AI work without relocating.

04 · Skills · The skills employers are asking for

Naukri's World AI Day Report 2026 found AI skills in 15.4% of technology job descriptions, up from 0.9% in 2020. Even non-tech roles now mention AI about six times as often as they did in 2020, and 77% of surveyed professionals already use AI at work.

Skill cluster Signal Typical roles
Generative AI and LLMs (prompting, RAG, embeddings, vector databases) +58% demand projected GenAI engineer, AI application developer
AI agents and agentic workflows Fastest-rising AI engineer, automation engineer
Machine learning 34% of AI jobs ML engineer, data scientist
Data analytics with AI (SQL, Python, BI tools, GenAI) Top AI domain in NCR Data analyst, business analyst
MLOps, cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform 38% GCC supply gap MLOps / DevOps / platform engineer
AI in software testing and QA Top-3 AI domain SDET, QA automation engineer

Signals: foundit (GenAI +58%, ML share), LinkedIn (agents), CBRE (NCR analytics, QA among top domains), Guess (GCC platform engineering gap).

05 · Pay · AI salaries are pulling away from the rest of tech

foundit reports that AI salaries in India compounded 23% between 2024 and 2026, and AI posted the highest year-on-year pay growth of any category it tracks, at 12%. Naukri's data also shows professionals with AI skills earn higher median pay than peers without them, in both IT and non-IT roles. In an Indeed survey, over 40% of employers said AI-skilled roles carry an 11–30% premium.

Stage Typical AI / ML range What pushes you higher
Fresher (0–2 yrs) ₹6 – 14 LPA Live projects, GitHub portfolio, GCC or product company
Mid level (3–6 yrs) ₹18 – 35 LPA Production experience, GenAI and LLM work
Senior (7+ yrs) ₹35 – 60 LPA+ Leading AI systems, MLOps, domain depth
LLM specialist (mid) ₹25 – 60 LPA RAG, fine-tuning, shipped LLM products

Indicative ranges compiled from 2026 salary guides by Instahyre, Taggd and Futureense. Pay varies widely by company type: IT services firms pay noticeably less than global product companies and GCCs, and Tier-2 cities typically pay 15–25% below metros for comparable roles.

Entry-level is the hardest door to open

The honest picture for freshers

An ICRIER survey of about 650 IT firms found 55% reported fewer entry-level hires, while 35% reported more. In September 2026, Naukri found hiring for 0–3 year experience up just 1%. Only about 18% of AI jobs are open to people with 0–3 years of experience.

The same study shows what employers want instead: 63% of firms reported more demand for candidates who combine domain knowledge with AI or data skills. AI is mostly raising the bar on what a fresher must show, rather than wiping out jobs. ICRIER also flagged that new graduates enter the market with limited AI skills, and that firms are not investing enough in training them.

A degree alone is no longer enough. Candidates who get shortlisted show proof: projects deployed end to end, real datasets, working automation frameworks, and the ability to explain how they used AI tools in that work.

07 · Action Plan · What to do next, by where you are now

  • 1

    Students and final-year graduates
Pick one track (analytics, testing, full stack or data science) and go deep rather than collecting certificates. Build 3–4 projects on real data, and put them on GitHub with a short write-up. Learn to use GenAI tools inside your track, not as a separate subject.

  • 2

    Freshers job hunting
Target GCCs and mid-size firms in NCR, not only mass IT hiring drives. Show one deployed project in interviews: what problem, what data, what result. Prepare for skills tests; hiring is increasingly skills-led over degree-led.

  • 3

    Working professionals
Add AI to the job you already do. The biggest salary premiums go to experienced people with AI skills. Testers: move from manual or script-only work to AI-assisted automation. Developers: add LLM integration, RAG and cloud deployment.

  • 4

    Career switchers
Data analytics with GenAI is the most accessible entry point from a non-tech background. Use your previous domain (finance, sales, operations, healthcare) as your advantage; 63% of firms want domain plus AI. Expect 6–9 months of focused practice before you are interview-ready.
