Angular 17 Tutorial: What's new in Angular 17

Estimated study time: 7 minutes. The release that modernized how Angular templates are written.

Angular 17 marked a major shift in developer experience, introducing a cleaner template syntax and built-in performance features that previously required extra setup.

New Built-in Control Flow

Angular 17 introduced @if, @for, and @switch as a more readable, faster alternative to *ngIf and *ngFor.

@if (user.isLoggedIn) {
  <p>Welcome back, {{ user.name }}!</p>
} @else {
  <p>Please log in.</p>
}

@for (item of items; track item.id) {
  <li>{{ item.name }}</li>
} @empty {
  <li>No items found.</li>
}

Deferrable Views

The new @defer block lets you lazily load parts of a template — not just whole routes — based on triggers like viewport visibility or user interaction.

@defer (on viewport) {
  <heavy-chart-component></heavy-chart-component>
} @placeholder {
  <p>Loading chart...</p>
}

Other Notable Changes

  • Standalone components became the default for new projects generated by the CLI.
  • Improved hydration support for server-side rendered apps.
  • A refreshed brand identity, including a new Angular logo.
💡 Tip: The old structural directives (*ngIf, *ngFor) still work — you don't need to rewrite existing templates immediately, but new code should prefer the built-in control flow syntax going forward.
