Firewalls and IDS/IPS

Firewalls and intrusion detection/prevention systems form the first line of defense at the network perimeter, filtering and monitoring traffic in real time.

How Firewalls Work

A firewall filters incoming and outgoing traffic based on predefined rules, blocking anything that doesn't match allowed criteria and forming a barrier between trusted and untrusted networks.

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS)

An IDS monitors network traffic for suspicious patterns and alerts security teams when it detects something unusual, without actively blocking the traffic itself.

Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS)

An IPS goes a step further than an IDS by actively blocking or dropping traffic that matches known attack patterns in real time, rather than just raising an alert.

Layering These Defenses

Firewalls, IDS, and IPS are most effective when used together as layered defenses, each catching different types of threats that the others might miss.
