Roadmap

A stage-by-stage roadmap

Work through the stages in order — each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence used in every Uncodemy Agentic AI course.

Agentic AI learning roadmap: eight stages, what to learn and the outcome
Stage Learn Outcome
1 LLM foundations Python, APIs, prompting, structured output You can call a model and get reliable output
2 Tool calling Function calling, handling results and errors A model can use a tool you wrote
3 The agent loop Plan, act, observe; stopping conditions You can build a single-agent loop
4 Memory and retrieval State, short and long-term memory, RAG as a tool Your agent remembers and looks things up
5 Orchestration Graph-based workflows, branching, loops You can control multi-step flows
6 Multi-agent patterns Specialised agents, hand-offs You can split work across agents
7 Tool protocols Model Context Protocol (MCP) concepts You understand standard tool connections
8 Evaluation and safety Test tasks, guardrails, permissions, human approval You can trust and limit your agent

Week 3–4 · Core skill
  • Plan, act and observe — the agent loop explained
  • Stopping conditions and step limits
  • Single-agent architecture and state
  • Debugging a live agent with logs
  • First working agent: a small assistant with one tool
4

Memory & Retrieval

Week 4–6 · Intermediate
  • Short-term vs long-term memory
  • Conversation buffer and summary memory
  • Vector stores for long-term memory

  • Debugging and tracing a running workflow
6

Multi-Agent Patterns

Week 8–9 · Advanced
  • Why multi-agent systems and when to use them
  • Supervisor and worker agent patterns
  • Agent-to-agent communication and hand-offs
  • Task delegation and orchestration
  • Trade-offs: complexity vs reliability
7

Tool Protocols (MCP)

Week 9–10 · Advanced
  • What the Model Context Protocol (MCP) is
  • Standard connections between agents and tools
  • Connecting external data sources safely
  • Reusable tool servers and clients
  • MCP vs custom function calling
8

Evaluation & Safety

Week 10–12 · Production
  • Building a test set for your agent
  • Measuring task success and step accuracy

Who it's for

Who should follow this roadmap

This roadmap is designed for anyone who wants a structured path into agentic AI — regardless of whether you're starting fresh or adding agent skills to an existing role.

Beginners & Freshers

Graduates from any discipline who want a clear, ordered path into AI agents without getting lost in scattered tutorials.

Start at Stage 1

Software Developers

Developers who already code in Python and want to learn tool calling, agent loops and orchestration to build real AI applications.

Start at Stage 2

LLM / GenAI Practitioners

Anyone already building LLM apps who wants to add tool calling, memory, multi-agent patterns and evaluation to their stack.

Start at Stage 3

Career Switchers

Working professionals moving into AI engineering who need a structured, project-based path with clear outcomes at each stage.

Start at Stage 1

Data Scientists

Data scientists adding agent capabilities to their ML skills — memory, retrieval, RAG-as-a-tool and evaluation workflows.

Start at Stage 4

AI Automation Engineers

Engineers building automation workflows who want agentic patterns, tool protocols and production-grade guardrails.

Start at Stage 5
Best practices

Tips & common mistakes

Learned from thousands of learners going through this roadmap. Read this before you start Stage 1.

Tips

  • Start with one narrow task and add autonomy slowly.
  • Set limits on steps, time and cost.
  • Log every tool call so you can debug.
  • Re-check framework documentation often; APIs change.
  • Build a small test set before you optimise prompts.
  • Prefer a working single agent over an ambitious multi-agent demo.

Common mistakes

  • Jumping to multi-agent systems before a single agent works.
  • No evaluation set — you can't tell if it improved.
  • Giving tools broad permissions.
  • Treating a demo as production-ready.
  • Ignoring token costs and latency until launch day.
  • Skipping prompt engineering fundamentals.
Career scope

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before starting the roadmap.

What is the roadmap to learn agentic AI?

Learn LLM and prompting basics, then tool calling, the agent loop, memory and retrieval, orchestration, tool protocols such as MCP, and finally evaluation and safety.

Do I need to learn generative AI before agentic AI?

Yes. Agents are built on language models, so understanding LLMs, prompting and APIs first makes agent concepts much easier.

Which frameworks are used to build agents?

Frameworks such as LangGraph, CrewAI and AutoGen are commonly used. Learn the concepts first, then choose a framework and check its current documentation.

What should my first agent project be?

A small assistant that uses one or two tools, such as a document search and a calculator, with strict step limits, is a good first project.

Is agentic AI safe to use in production?

It can be, with narrow scope, limited permissions, logging, evaluation and human approval for risky actions. Autonomy should grow only as reliability is proven.

How long does it take to learn agentic AI?

Following this roadmap stage by stage, most learners need 3 to 4 months of consistent study and project work to become interview-ready for entry-level agentic AI roles. If you already code in Python, you can move faster through stages 1 and 2.

Do I need Python to start this roadmap?

Basic Python helps, but Stage 1 covers the essentials — syntax, APIs, virtual environments and calling a model. If you're completely new to programming, expect to spend 2–3 extra weeks on Stage 1 before moving on.

Are these PDFs free to download?

Yes. All three Agentic AI roadmap PDFs on this page are completely free to download. No sign-up, payment or form is required — just click the sticky download button on this page.

How often are these PDFs updated?

The PDFs are reviewed by Uncodemy's trainer team and updated periodically as frameworks and best practices change. The current version was last reviewed on 24 October 2026. Each PDF card shows its update date.
