Talk to a mentorSame job, two frameworks: code side by side
A word count on a large dataset — MapReduce in Java vs PySpark.
from pyspark.sql import SparkSession from pyspark.sql.functions import explode, split, lower, col spark = SparkSession.builder.appName("WordCount").getOrCreate() lines = spark.read.text("hdfs:///data/books/*.txt") counts = ( lines.select(explode(split(lower(col("value")), "\\W+")).alias("word")) .filter(col("word") != "") .groupBy("word") .count() .orderBy(col("count").desc()) ) counts.show(20)
PySpark builds a DAG, optimises the plan and processes data in memory. The whole job is a few lines of Python — fast to write and fast to run on large datasets.
public class WordCount { public static class TokenizerMapper extends Mapper<Object, Text, Text, IntWritable> { private final static IntWritable one = new IntWritable(1); private Text word = new Text(); public void map(Object key, Text value, Context context) throws IOException, InterruptedException { StringTokenizer itr = new StringTokenizer(value.toString()); while (itr.hasMoreTokens()) { word.set(itr.nextToken()); context.write(word, one); } } } public static class IntSumReducer extends Reducer<Text, IntWritable, Text, IntWritable> { public void reduce(Text key, Iterable<IntWritable> values, Context context) throws IOException, InterruptedException { int sum = 0; for (IntWritable val : values) sum += val.get(); context.write(key, new IntWritable(sum)); } } }
MapReduce writes intermediate results to disk between Map and Reduce, and needs much more boilerplate. It is still used for legacy batch jobs but is far less common in new projects.
from pyspark.sql import SparkSession # Spark reads and writes HDFS as its storage layer spark = SparkSession.builder.appName("SalesETL").getOrCreate() df = spark.read.parquet("hdfs:///data/raw/sales/") clean = ( df.dropDuplicates(["order_id"]) .fillna({"qty": 1, "unit_price": 0.0}) .withColumn("revenue", col("qty") * col("unit_price")) ) clean.write.mode("overwrite").partitionBy("region") \ .parquet("hdfs:///data/clean/sales/")
In many enterprises, Spark runs on YARN and reads/writes HDFS. This is the common hybrid pattern: Hadoop provides storage and resource management, Spark does the processing.

Frequently asked questions: Apache Spark vs Hadoop
Answers to what freshers and working professionals ask us most.
Is Spark replacing Hadoop in 2026?
Not entirely. Spark has largely replaced Hadoop MapReduce as the processing engine because it is 10–100x faster for most workloads thanks to in-memory computing. But Hadoop's ecosystem still lives on in production: HDFS for distributed storage, YARN for resource management and Hive for the SQL layer. In modern cloud data platforms, managed Spark (Databricks, EMR, Dataproc) often runs without traditional Hadoop, but many enterprises still operate hybrid stacks. Think of Spark as the compute layer and Hadoop as the storage and resource layer that Spark can use.
Why is Spark faster than Hadoop MapReduce?
MapReduce writes intermediate results to disk between every Map and Reduce stage, which is slow and I/O-heavy. Spark keeps intermediate data in memory across stages, uses a DAG (directed acyclic graph) execution engine to optimise the whole job, and supports lazy evaluation with caching. For iterative algorithms like machine learning and graph processing, this can make Spark 10–100x faster than MapReduce. For very large one-pass batch jobs, the gap is smaller but Spark still usually wins.
Should I learn Spark or Hadoop first?
Learn Spark first. It is where most new big data jobs are, and PySpark skills are in demand across data engineering and data science roles. You do not need deep Hadoop knowledge to be productive with Spark. That said, understanding HDFS and YARN basics helps in enterprise environments where Spark runs on Hadoop. If you are targeting legacy enterprise or on-prem big data teams, add HDFS, Hive and YARN after Spark.
What is common between Spark and Hadoop?
Both are Apache open-source projects designed for distributed processing of large datasets. Both scale horizontally across commodity machines and integrate with Hive, HBase and the Hadoop ecosystem. Spark can read from HDFS, and Hadoop jobs can coexist with Spark on the same YARN cluster. Both are widely used in data engineering pipelines and are supported by managed cloud services (EMR, Dataproc, Databricks).
Do I need to know Java to learn Spark?
No. Spark is written in Scala and supports Java, Scala, Python (PySpark) and R. Most beginners start with PySpark because Python is easy to learn and widely used in data science. PySpark covers almost all of the Spark API — DataFrames, Spark SQL, MLlib and streaming. Java and Scala are useful for performance-critical code and Spark internals but not required to start.
Which pays more in India in 2026: Spark or Hadoop developer?
Pay depends on skills, projects and company. Spark and PySpark skills usually command a premium because modern data platforms use Spark for ETL, analytics and ML. Indicatively: freshers with Spark skills ₹4–8 LPA, mid-level (2–4 yrs) ₹8–18 LPA, senior (5+ yrs) ₹18–35+ LPA. Hadoop-only roles are declining and typically pay lower, though HDFS/YARN specialists remain valued in large on-prem enterprises.
Is Hadoop dead in 2026?
Hadoop MapReduce as a processing engine is largely legacy, but the Hadoop ecosystem is not dead. HDFS remains common for on-prem data lakes, YARN is still used for resource management, and Hive is still widespread in enterprise warehouses. Cloud adoption is shifting workloads to S3/ADLS plus Spark, but many large enterprises (BFSI, telecom, public sector) continue to run Hadoop. Learning HDFS and Hive basics is still useful, even if MapReduce is no longer a primary skill.
