How to become a
Power BI Developer in India.

A Power BI Developer builds interactive dashboards and reports that help businesses make decisions from their data. They work with Power Query, data models, DAX measures and the Power BI Service to publish, refresh and secure reports. In India, the role typically requires 3–5 months of focused learning for a fresher. Glassdoor reports an average base salary of ₹6L for Power BI Developers in India (50 salaries, latest 29 Sep 2026).

Role overview

What is a Power BI Developer?

A Power BI Developer is a data professional who builds reports and dashboards in Microsoft Power BI. They take raw data from sources like SQL databases, Excel files and cloud apps, clean and transform it with Power Query, model it into a star schema, write DAX measures for calculations, and design reports that business teams actually use. They then publish the report to the Power BI Service and manage scheduled refreshes, access and row-level security.

The role is more than drag-and-drop chart building. Employers hiring for a Power BI Developer expect strong SQL, a clear understanding of data modelling (star schema, relationships, cardinality), solid DAX skills (CALCULATE, time intelligence, iterators) and the ability to work on the Power BI Service — workspaces, apps, gateways, refresh schedules and RLS. That is what separates a Power BI Developer from a business user who makes a few charts.

Role Power BI Developer
Typical entry route Any graduate + Excel + SQL + Power BI + portfolio of dashboards
Core skills Excel, SQL, Power Query, data modelling, DAX, report design, Power BI Service, RLS
Main tools Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, Excel, SQL Server / PostgreSQL, Power Query, DAX Studio

Day to day

What does a Power BI Developer do?

A typical day for a Power BI Developer in an Indian company involves a mix of data work, report building, DAX and stakeholder conversations. These are the tasks that come up most often.

01

Connect to data sources

Pull data from SQL databases, Excel files, SharePoint, cloud apps and APIs into Power BI using connectors and gateways.

02

Clean and transform data with Power Query

Rename, filter, merge, pivot and reshape data in Power Query so the model has clean, analysis-ready tables.

03

Build the data model

Design a star schema with fact and dimension tables, set relationships and cardinality, and create a date table for time intelligence.

04

Write DAX measures

Build measures for revenue, growth, YTD, running totals, rankings and other business KPIs using CALCULATE, FILTER, time intelligence and iterators.

05

Design reports and dashboards

Lay out visuals for clarity — bar charts, line charts, matrices, KPI cards, slicers, drill-throughs and bookmarks.

06

Publish and manage the Power BI Service

Publish to workspaces, set up scheduled refreshes, create apps, manage gateways, and configure row-level security.

07

Optimise performance

Reduce model size, remove unused columns, use aggregations and check DAX with DAX Studio when reports are slow.

08

Work with stakeholders

Gather requirements, explain what the data shows, and iterate on the report as business needs change.

Power BI Developers work closely with data analysts, business analysts, data engineers, SQL developers and business stakeholders. In India, the industries hiring most actively are IT services, BFSI, retail and e-commerce, manufacturing, healthcare and consulting.

03
Skills

Power BI Developer skills you need

The technical skills below are the ones that appear most often in Power BI Developer job descriptions in India. The level column tells you how deep you need to go for a fresher or entry-level role.

Technical skills — why they matter and the level needed
Skill Why it matters Level needed
Excel Most reporting work still starts in Excel — pivot tables, lookups, basic formulas. Strong
SQL The primary data source for Power BI. SELECT, joins, aggregations, CTEs, window functions. Strong
Power Query (M) Data cleaning and transformation — the layer between raw data and the model. Strong
Data modelling Star schema, fact vs dimension tables, relationships, cardinality, date tables. Strong
DAX The language for measures and calculated columns — CALCULATE, FILTER, time intelligence, iterators. Strong
Report design Choosing the right visual, clear layout, colour, slicing and drill-through. Working
Power BI Service Workspaces, apps, datasets, scheduled refresh, gateways, deployment pipelines. Working
Row-level security (RLS) Restricting data by user role is a common requirement in enterprise deployments. Working
DAX Studio and Tabular Editor Performance tuning, measure debugging, model documentation. Basic–Working
Power BI Gateway Connecting on-prem data sources to the cloud service for scheduled refresh. Basic
Basic statistics Understanding averages, medians, distributions and trends — needed to interpret data honestly. Basic
Data storytelling Presenting insights clearly to non-technical stakeholders. Working
Soft skills employers look for
Skill Why it matters
Attention to detail A wrong number in a report costs trust with business teams.
Communication You need to translate business questions into data answers and explain what the report shows.
Requirement gathering Understanding what the stakeholder actually needs is half the work.
Patience with iterations Reports go through many rounds of feedback before they land.
Business sense Knowing what revenue, margin or churn mean helps you design better reports.
04
The roadmap

How to become a Power BI Developer: step-by-step roadmap

The roadmap below is the order that works for most learners in India — Excel and SQL first, then Power Query, data modelling, DAX, and the Power BI Service. The time estimates assume 2–3 focused hours per day.

1

Excel and data basics

Pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, basic formulas, sorting and filtering, and an introduction to what data analysis actually means.

2–3 weeks
2

SQL for reporting

SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, JOINs, subqueries, CTEs and basic window functions. Enough to pull the right data into Power BI.

4 weeks
3

Power Query — data cleaning and transformation

Connect to sources, shape data, merge and append queries, pivot and unpivot, and understand the M language basics.

2 weeks
4

Data modelling — star schema, relationships

Fact vs dimension tables, one-to-many and many-to-many relationships, cardinality, cross-filter direction, and a date table.

2 weeks
5

DAX — measures, CALCULATE, time intelligence

Measures vs calculated columns, CALCULATE and FILTER, SUMX and iterators, time intelligence (YTD, MTD, SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR) and ranking.

4 weeks
6

Report design and Power BI Service — publishing, refresh, row-level security

Visual selection, layout, slicers and drill-through. Publishing to workspaces, apps, scheduled refresh, gateways and RLS.

2 weeks
7

Build 3–4 dashboards for a portfolio

Sales, HR, finance and operations dashboards on real public datasets. Each published to Power BI Service with a short write-up.

3–4 weeks
8

Optional: Microsoft PL-300 certification; then resume and interviews

PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst Associate) is a well-known vendor certification and helps in some companies. It is not mandatory. Then polish your resume and prepare for interviews.

2–3 weeks

Total realistic timeline for a fresher studying 2–3 hours a day: about 3–5 months. The single biggest predictor of getting hired is a portfolio of 3–4 well-designed dashboards with clean models and DAX measures — not the number of certificates.

05
Qualifications

Qualifications: degrees, non-IT graduates and certifications

Power BI is one of the more accessible data careers because employers care more about the dashboards you can build than which degree you hold. That said, some qualifications still help in India — especially for campus placements and larger companies.

Which degrees and certifications help
Qualification How much it helps Notes
B.Tech / BE (any branch) Strong for campus and large-company hiring Common route for freshers at product companies.
B.Com / BBA / MBA Strong for finance, retail and business-facing BI roles Power BI is heavily used in finance and business teams.
BCA / MCA / B.Sc / M.Sc Moderate — portfolio matters more Focus on SQL and DAX to stand out.
Non-IT graduates (Commerce, Arts, etc.) Very possible — Power BI is non-IT friendly Build 3–4 dashboards and learn SQL properly.
Microsoft PL-300 certification Helpful add-on A well-known vendor certification. Fees vary — check the Microsoft site.
Uncodemy Data Analytics certificate Verifiable proof of training Verifiable at certificate.uncodemy.com.
06

09
Interview prep

Power BI Developer interview questions

These are the eight questions that come up most often in entry-level Power BI Developer interviews in India. The answers below are short model answers — expand them with examples from your own dashboards.

Q1 What is the difference between a calculated column and a measure in Power BI?

A calculated column is computed row by row when the data is loaded and stored in the model, using memory. A measure is computed at query time based on the context of the visual, so it responds to filters and slicers. Measures are usually the right choice for aggregations.

Q2 What does CALCULATE do in DAX?

CALCULATE evaluates an expression in a modified filter context. It is the most important DAX function — used for year-to-date, prior year, category share and virtually every business KPI. You pass the expression first, then the filter modifications.

Q3 What is a star schema and why does it matter?

A star schema has fact tables (transactions, events) in the centre, connected to dimension tables (customer, product, date, geography). It matters because Power BI performs best on this model, DAX is simpler, and relationships are easier to reason about than a flat table.

Q4 How do you handle many-to-many relationships?

In Power BI, a many-to-many relationship between two tables is possible but usually indicates a modelling problem. The better approach is to introduce a bridge table between the two, or reshape the model so each relationship has a clear one-to-many direction.

Q5 What is row-level security in Power BI?

RLS restricts which rows a user can see in a report based on their role. You define roles in Power BI Desktop with DAX filters, assign users to roles in the Power BI Service, and the filters apply when the user opens the report or the dataset.

Q6 How do you optimise a slow Power BI report?

Start with the model: remove unused columns and tables, use a proper star schema, and avoid unnecessary calculated columns. Then check DAX with DAX Studio — replace iterators with set-based functions where possible. Also reduce the number of visuals per page and enable aggregations.

Q7 What is the difference between Import mode and DirectQuery?

Import mode loads a copy of the data into Power BI's in-memory engine — fast queries, but data is only as fresh as the last refresh. DirectQuery queries the source at report time — always fresh, but slower and dependent on the source's performance. Most models use Import mode.

Q8 How do you schedule a refresh in Power BI Service?

After publishing the dataset to a workspace, open the dataset settings and configure a refresh schedule — up to eight times a day for Pro, more on Premium. For on-prem sources you also need to install and register a Power BI Gateway and add the data source credentials.

10
Growth

11
Fit check

Is Power BI Developer a good career?

Power BI development is a strong career for the right person, but it is not for everyone. Here is an honest look at the pros, the challenges and who tends to enjoy it.

Pros

Why people choose Power BI

Accessible entry: Non-IT graduates with strong Excel and SQL can enter with a good portfolio.

Clear learning path: Excel → SQL → Power Query → modelling → DAX → Service — well-defined.

Wide hiring base: Almost every mid-size and large Indian company uses Power BI.

Portfolio-friendly: You can publish dashboards publicly and share the links with employers.
Challenges

What to be ready for

Low starting pay: Glassdoor reports an average base of ₹6L (50 salaries, 29 Sep 2026), which is lower than AI or DevOps roles.

Stakeholder pressure: Business teams often want "one more number" at short notice.

Detail matters: A single wrong measure damages trust; you have to test your own work.

DAX is deep: Basic DAX is easy, but real performance and time-intelligence work takes time to learn.

Who it suits: People who enjoy working with data, care about accuracy, and like explaining insights to others. If you are comfortable with Excel and want a data career without heavy coding, Power BI is a good fit. If you want a higher salary ceiling, plan to move into analytics engineering or data science after a few years.

12
Role comparison

Power BI developer vs data analyst vs BI analyst
