01

What Is LangChain?

LangChain is an open-source framework for building applications on large language models. It provides reusable building blocks for connecting to model providers, creating prompt templates, loading and splitting documents, retrieving relevant information, calling tools, and processing model outputs. These pieces can be composed into multi-step pipelines without implementing every component from scratch.

LangChain provides the building blocks. Your application decides how to combine them.

Component 01

Provide a consistent interface for interacting with chat and embedding models.

Model wrappers let you switch between providers without rewriting the rest of your application.

Choose the Right Amount of Framework

Direct Model API

Input → Model API → Response

For a very simple application, a direct API call may be easier to understand, implement and debug.

Composable LangChain App

Prompt → Retriever → Model → Parser

When you need reusable prompt templates, retrieval, document processing, tools or several processing steps, LangChain can provide ready-made components that reduce repeated implementation work.

Key takeaway. Use the framework when its abstractions solve a real problem. Avoid adding layers merely because they are available.

Debugging complexity increases with the number of layers. Understand the code behind each abstraction and be prepared to test the pipeline end to end.

Your LangChain Learning Path

Start with the basic building blocks, then combine them into useful LLM applications.

01

LLM Fundamentals

Model inputs, outputs, chat models and provider integrations.

02

Prompt Templates

Build reusable prompts with variables and structured instructions.

03

Chains & Composition

Combine processing steps into a clearly organised pipeline.

04

Document Processing

Load documents and split content into chunks.

05

Retrieval & Vector Stores

Embeddings, vector stores, retrievers and context retrieval.

06

Tools & Output Parsing

Connect tools and transform model responses into structured output.

07

Build & Evaluate

Test outputs, assess retrieval or tools, document the library version.

08

From Flexible Prompts to Structured Outputs

Prompt template
Answer the question using the
supplied context.

Context: {context}
Question: {question}

Structured output

  "source_used": true
}

Note. Prompt placeholders are filled with application data when the prompt is prepared. Output parsers help convert model responses into the expected structure, depending on the model integration and output format. Both examples are illustrative, and no parser is claimed to guarantee valid output without appropriate validation.

09

Build Better LLM Applications by Avoiding These Mistakes

Mistake 01

Copying Outdated Tutorials

LangChain APIs can change between versions.

Check the documentation relevant to the installed version.
Mistake 02

Not Pinning Dependencies

Unpinned packages may update unexpectedly and break the pipeline.

Use dependency management so the project uses intended versions.
Mistake 03

Building Long Chains Without Evaluation

Each component may execute while the overall answer is still poor.

Test the quality and behaviour of the complete pipeline.
Mistake 04

Expecting a Framework to Fix a Poor Prompt

A framework cannot automatically compensate for unclear instructions or missing context.

Improve the prompt, context and application design first.
10

Learn the Components by Building

01

Understand

Learn the role of each building block before composing the application.

02

Connect

Combine a prompt template with a model and inspect the resulting output.

03

Extend

Add retrieval, tools or an output parser only when the application needs them.

04

Evaluate

Test the full pipeline, investigate failures and verify the output meets your requirements.
