A Playwright framework organises tests, page objects, fixtures, configuration, reporting and CI so that a suite stays maintainable as it grows. A clear structure and independent tests matter more than the number of tests.
A framework is the structure around your tests: where files live, how browsers are configured, how test data and login are handled, and how results are reported. Playwright's test runner already provides much of this, including parallel runs, retries and reports. Your job is to add a clean layout and reusable pieces so tests stay short and readable.
A maintainable Playwright repository separates test logic from page actions, fixtures, and configuration helpers:
| Folder or file | Purpose |
|---|---|
tests/ |
Test files grouped by feature or user journey |
pages/ |
Page Object classes: locators and actions per page |
fixtures/ |
Reusable setup such as a logged-in page or test state |
utils/ and data/ |
Helpers, API clients, and mock test data sets |
playwright.config |
Browsers (projects), retries, workers, reporter, trace settings, base URL |
These essential settings in playwright.config.ts control execution speed, browser matrix, and failure diagnosis:
| Setting | Why it matters |
|---|---|
Projects |
Run the same tests on Chromium, Firefox and WebKit across desktop and mobile viewports |
Retries |
Limit retries so real failures are not hidden or ignored in test logs |
Workers |
Parallel execution; tests must be completely independent for speed without race conditions |
Trace on first retry |
Collect traces only when needed, to debug failures with full DOM snapshot, screenshots and network logs |
Base URL and environments |
Switch between test environments (dev, staging, prod) without changing test code |
