Fresher Hiring Report 2026

Fresher jobs exist in 2026 — 75% of Indian employers plan to hire freshers in July–December 2026 — but they are going to candidates who can prove skills, not to those who only hold a degree. Hiring intent is up, volume is not: foundit's July 2026 tracker shows fresher postings down 10% year on year as more roles turn into internships or contracts. AI skills now decide the better offers, and pay is polarised: 65% of fresher roles pay below ₹5 LPA, while skilled tracks pay ₹6.5–25 LPA.

01 · Hiring Outlook: The Key Numbers

75%Employers planning to hire freshers, Jul–Dec 2026 (up from 73%)
76%IT sector fresher hiring intent (down from 81%)
−10%Fresher job postings, July 2026 year on year
65%Fresher roles paying below ₹5 LPA

The 2026 market is a gradual recovery, not a boom

Employers want freshers, but fewer of them, with sharper skills. TeamLease's founder summed up the shift as being less about how many freshers are hired and more about which freshers get hired. Employers named limited practical exposure and fast-changing skill needs as the biggest gaps in fresh graduates.

IT services are selective: IT fresher hiring intent fell from 81% to 76%. Wipro set no FY27 fresher target; TCS, Infosys and Cognizant are still hiring, but in tighter batches with AI and project screening. GCCs and non-IT sectors are the growth story — GCCs are on course for about 5.1 lakh hires in 2026, two-thirds asking for AI, data or automation skills. Retail, e-commerce/start-ups (93%) and manufacturing (89%) lead fresher intent.

AI skills now decide the better offers. At TCS, 60% of FY26 fresher hires were AI-skilled, up from 10–15% three years ago. AI-led roles went from about 1% to 4% of fresher postings in a year.

02 · Who Is Hiring Freshers

Share of employers planning to hire freshers, Jul–Dec 2026

Sector Hiring intent
E-commerce & tech start-ups 93%
Retail 93%
Manufacturing 89%
IT 76%
Telecommunications 61%
Marketing & advertising 59%
Healthcare & pharma 54%
Logistics 53%
Media & entertainment 52%

TeamLease EdTech Career Outlook Report HY2 2026 (1,097 employers, surveyed May–Jul 2026), via People Matters and NewKerala. IT intent dropped from 81% in H1 to 76% in H2 2026, while manufacturing rose from 86% to 89%.

Big IT and tech employers: 2026 fresher plans

Company 2026 / FY27 fresher plan What's changed
TCS ~25,000 campus offers made so far; says it is on track for ~40,000 freshers a year 60% of FY26 fresher hires were AI-skilled; TCS Prime adds an AI or data project review
Cognizant 24,000–25,000 fresh graduates in 2026 ~20% more than its 2025 intake
Infosys ~20,000 college graduates in FY27 Hiring locally for its Hubballi campus as it expands beyond tier-1 cities
Wipro No fixed FY27 fresher target; hiring on demand Hired ~7,500 freshers in FY26; runs 50 university AI and cyber security CoEs with a separate hiring track
GCCs (global capability centres) ~5.1 lakh total hires expected in 2026 About two-thirds ask for AI, data or automation skills; clustered in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune

Semiconductor, manufacturing, aerospace and data-centre companies are also recruiting more freshers in 2026, widening options for students outside pure software.

03 · Most In-Demand Fresher Roles in 2026

Role Demand signal (2026) Why companies want it
AI / ML and GenAI roles AI/ML hiring up 31% YoY in August and 20% in September 2026; AI-led roles 1% → 4% of fresher postings Every product and service team is adding AI features
Software Testing / QA Automation Engineer Top fresher role in Bengaluru, wanted by 54% of employers there AI writes more code, so more code must be tested; automation pays 30–50% more than manual testing
Data Analyst / Business Analyst Data and analytics named among the core campus demand areas Retail, BFSI, e-commerce and GCCs all run on dashboards and reporting
Full Stack Developer (MERN / Python) Software development remains the largest campus demand area Start-ups want one person who can ship a whole feature
Cloud and DevOps Engineer Cloud named among core campus demand areas GCC and data-centre growth needs cloud operations talent
Digital Marketing Executive Wanted by 48% of Bengaluru employers Retail and D2C brands are hiring freshers heavily
UI/UX Designer Listed among top in-demand fresher roles Every digital product needs usable screens

The roles themselves have not changed much; what changed is that employers now expect freshers to use AI tools on top of core skills in each of them.

04 · Salary Benchmarks for Freshers

A fresher's salary in 2026 depends far more on the track they qualify for than on their degree: 65% of fresher roles pay under ₹5 LPA, while skill-led tracks start at ₹5–9 LPA and go much higher.

Track Typical fresher CTC range
Manual QA tester ₹3–5 LPA
IT services standard track (TCS Ninja, Infosys SE, Wipro, HCL entry) ₹3.5–4.5 LPA
Data Analyst ₹3.5–6 LPA
QA Automation Engineer ₹5–9 LPA
Infosys Power Programmer / Specialist ₹6.5–9 LPA
TCS Digital / Prime ₹7–12 LPA
Product company SDE (e.g. Flipkart) ₹18–25 LPA

Approximate CTC ranges compiled from foundit (Jul 2026), FACE Prep, Jobrise, Weekday and SightsIn Plus; actual offers vary by company, city and interview performance. 41% of fresher roles pay ₹3–5 LPA — the largest single band. The gap between 3.5 LPA and 7+ LPA is usually a portfolio of real projects, one specialisation (automation, data, cloud or AI), and strong interview practice.

05 · Skills That Get Freshers Hired

AI and data skills now earn freshers a 20–25% hiring premium, and analytical problem-solving adds another 10–15%, according to Deloitte India's Campus Workforce Trends 2026.

Skill area What to learn Proof employers look for
AI and GenAI literacy Prompting, using AI coding and analysis tools, basics of LLMs and RAG, Python for AI One working AI project with a live demo or GitHub link
Data analytics Excel, SQL, Power BI or Tableau, Python (pandas), statistics 2–3 dashboards built on real datasets, with business insights written up
Test automation Manual testing basics, Selenium or Playwright, Java/JavaScript/Python, API testing, CI basics An automation framework on GitHub that tests a real web app
Full stack development HTML/CSS/JS, React, Node/Express or Python/Django, databases, Git 2 deployed apps with source code
Cloud and DevOps Linux, AWS/Azure basics, Docker, CI/CD pipelines A deployed app with an automated pipeline; a cloud practitioner certificate
Core aptitude and DSA Quant, logical reasoning, verbal, data structures Clearing mock tests in the TCS NQT / Infosys / Wipro pattern
Communication Explaining your project, structured answers, email writing Mock interviews; a clear LinkedIn profile

Employers also rank learning agility, adaptability and collaboration highly in 2026 campus decisions. Two complete, demo-ready projects say more about you than a long list of course certificates (FACE Prep).

06 · Where the Jobs Are: Cities and Work Models

Bengaluru is still the strongest fresher market (89% hiring intent in H2 2026, ahead of Mumbai at 75% and Chennai at 71%), but GCC and fresher hiring is spreading fast to tier-2 cities.

Location Share of GCC hiring, 2026
Bengaluru 30%
Hyderabad 15%
Tier-2 cities (combined) 15%
Pune 12%
Mumbai 11%
Chennai 9%
Delhi NCR 8%
  • Early-career talent (0–3 years) is the fastest-growing GCC segment: 30% of GCC hiring, up 18% year on year.
  • Delhi NCR / Noida: Noida's Sector 62 and 125 corridors host IT service campuses such as HCL, Wipro and TCS, while Gurugram's GCCs (EY GDS, KPMG GDS, Deloitte USI, Nagarro) run more selective hiring. Delhi NCR saw 34% AI hiring growth in May 2026.
  • Rising tier-2 hubs: Coimbatore, Jaipur, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam are attracting GCC investment, helped by lower attrition (8–12% vs 18–22% in tier-1).
  • Be open to relocation: freshers willing to move to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune or a tier-2 GCC hub have a much larger pool of openings than those who search in one city only.

07 · How Companies Hire Freshers Now

Your resume is usually read by AI first: 86% of campus employers now use AI in recruitment, and 72% use it to screen resumes (Deloitte India, Aug 2026).

A typical 2026 fresher hiring funnel

  1. AI resume screening — an applicant tracking system matches your resume keywords, skills and projects to the job description.
  2. Online assessment — aptitude, coding and increasingly AI-awareness questions. Each mass recruiter runs its own: TCS NQT, Infosys InfyTQ / HackWithInfy, Wipro NLTH, HCL TalentCare, Cognizant's assessment, Accenture's test. 48% of employers now use AI-based assessments.
  3. Technical interview — expect "walk me through your project". Higher tracks such as TCS Prime include an AI or data project review.
  4. HR / managerial round — communication, attitude, learning agility and relocation flexibility.
  5. Offer, or internship first — more employers test freshers through internships that convert into pre-placement offers (PPOs). At one engineering college, about 30% of placed students got offers through the internship route this season.

Timing matters: IT services campus hiring typically runs July to January, peaking August to February, while off-campus hiring runs year-round (HirePro). Apply to several company assessments in parallel rather than one at a time.

08 · Reality Check: What Freshers Are Up Against

The market rewards prepared freshers and punishes generic ones; here is the honest picture.

  • Fewer permanent openings. Fresher postings fell 10% year on year in July 2026, and nearly one in three fresher roles became an internship or contract. Treat a good internship as a real entry route, not a consolation prize.
  • IT services are no longer a guaranteed safety net. Wipro set no FY27 fresher target, and IT hiring intent dropped five points in six months.
  • Degrees alone don't clear the filter. Employers cite limited practical exposure as the top gap in freshers, and AI screening rejects resumes without matching skills and projects.
  • Most offers sit at ₹3–5 LPA. Higher packages go to candidates with specialised skills and proof of work.
  • AI is raising the bar. Freshers are now expected to use AI tools inside their core job, whether testing, coding, analysis or marketing.
  • Competition from experienced candidates. Many "0–3 years" roles attract people with one or two years of experience, so freshers must show job-ready skills, not just potential.

The upside: hiring budgets are rising (campus budgets up 19%, per Deloitte), and demand for skilled freshers in AI, data, testing and GCC roles is growing faster than supply.

09 · Your 90-Day Job-Ready Plan

Pick one career path, spend 90 days building proof, and start applying from day 60 — not after you "finish learning".

Career path Days 1–30: foundations Days 31–60: build proof Days 61–90: get hired
Data Analyst (with GenAI) Excel, SQL, statistics basics Power BI dashboards + Python analysis on 2–3 real datasets; use AI for insights Portfolio site, mock case interviews, apply to 10+ roles a week
QA Automation / SDET Manual testing, test cases, Java or JavaScript basics Selenium or Playwright framework on GitHub; API tests; AI-assisted test generation Mock technical rounds, ISTQB-style prep, apply to service, product and GCC QA roles
Full Stack Developer HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Git React + Node (MERN) or Python/Django app with auth and database Deploy 2 apps, DSA practice, apply to start-ups and service companies
Data Science / AI Python, statistics, pandas ML models + one GenAI (LLM/RAG) project with a demo Kaggle or GitHub profile, project walkthrough practice, apply to GCCs and AI start-ups
Cloud and DevOps Linux, networking, AWS basics Docker, CI/CD pipeline deploying a real app Cloud practitioner certificate, mock interviews, apply to GCC and service roles
Business Analytics Excel, business statistics, SQL Case studies and dashboards for sales, finance or marketing data Case interview practice, apply to BFSI, consulting and e-commerce

Every path, every week: solve aptitude and coding questions for 30 minutes daily (TCS NQT / Infosys / Wipro patterns); push one project update to GitHub or your portfolio; post one learning or project on LinkedIn; practise one mock interview, especially "walk me through your project"; apply to internships and full-time roles in parallel, on and off campus.
