Generative AI Skills Report 2026–27

Generative AI is no longer a separate career track. It is becoming a required layer on top of every IT role: analyst, tester, developer, marketer, designer. Three numbers tell the story for Indian students and professionals: Gen AI / LLM skills are the fastest-growing AI skill in India with demand up nearly 60% year on year; only 16% of IT professionals have AI skills, leaving a Gen AI talent gap of about 53%; and AI skills now appear in 15.4% of tech job descriptions, up from 0.9% in 2020.

01 · The Market: Demand is outrunning supply

29LAI-linked roles posted in India in 2025 (foundit)
32%AI hiring growth projected for 2026, about 3.8 lakh roles
53%Gen AI talent supply gap (TeamLease Digital)
15.4%Tech job descriptions mentioning AI in 2026, up from 0.9% in 2020 (Naukri)

Where the jobs are

IT software and services hold 37% of AI jobs, followed by BFSI at 15.8% and manufacturing at 6%. BFSI grew fastest at 41%, with healthcare, retail, logistics and telecom close behind (foundit). Bengaluru leads with a 26% share; Hyderabad and Delhi-NCR are the next big hubs.

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists AI and big data as the fastest-growing skill, and AI and machine learning specialists among the fastest-growing jobs to 2030. It also estimates that workers can expect 39% of their core skills to become outdated within five years.

What this means for you: "upskilled" is common; "advanced and job-ready" is rare. Employers are paying for the second group. A certificate alone puts you in the 20 lakh. Projects and production skills put you in the 3 lakh.

02 · The Core Gen AI Skills Stack

Four levels plus Responsible AI

Every student needs Levels 1 to 3, whatever their track; developers, data scientists and DevOps engineers add Level 4. Level 3 is where most job offers are decided: an interviewer wants to see you use AI to do your actual job faster and better. Responsible AI is not a separate course; it is a habit at every level.

Level What you learn
Level 1 · Foundations How LLMs work: tokens, context window, hallucination, temperature. Python basics, data literacy, APIs, logical problem solving.
Level 2 · Use AI every day Structured prompting: role, context, task, format, examples. Research, drafting, summarising and analysis with AI assistants.
Level 3 · Apply AI inside your role Copilot in BI and Excel, AI test generation, AI coding help, AI ad creatives. Checking AI output: fact-checks, edge cases, accuracy on sample questions.
Level 4 · Build and ship AI LLM APIs, RAG, vector databases, agents and tool use, fine-tuning basics. Deployment, evaluation, cost and latency monitoring (LLMOps).

Responsible AI runs through every level: data privacy, bias and fairness, prompt injection, copyright, human review.

Tools and platforms to learn

Learn one tool per category deeply rather than ten tools shallowly. Tools change every few months; the category skill carries over.

Category Examples Who needs it
AI assistants (LLM chat) ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot Everyone
AI coding assistants GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code Developers, testers, data roles

Employers in India are naming Python, LLM apps, RAG, vector databases and MLOps as the core demand signals in Gen AI job posts (CareerIndia).

03 · Gen AI Skills by Career Track

Whatever your track, the winning profile in 2026–27 is core skill + Gen AI multiplier. Here is what that multiplier looks like for each path.

Career track Core skills employers still expect Gen AI skills that set you apart Example AI-era task
Data Analytics SQL, Excel, Power BI / Tableau, Python basics, statistics Prompting for analysis, Copilot in Excel/Power BI, LLM-based data cleaning, text-to-SQL, AI summaries of dashboards Turn 10,000 customer reviews into sentiment themes and a dashboard in a day
Business Analytics Requirements, process mapping, KPIs, stakeholder reporting AI-assisted requirement drafts, meeting-to-user-story conversion, AI use-case scoping and ROI Write a business case for an AI chatbot with cost, risk and success metrics
Automation Testing (Playwright / Selenium) Test design, Playwright / Selenium, API testing, CI/CD AI test generation, self-healing locators, LLM test data, testing AI features (hallucination, bias, prompt-injection checks) Build a test suite that validates a chatbot's answers, not just its buttons
Full Stack (MERN / Python) JavaScript / Python, React, Node / Django / FastAPI, databases, APIs LLM API integration, RAG, streaming chat UIs, AI coding assistants, cost and latency control Ship a "chat with your PDF" web app with login and usage limits
Data Science Python, ML, statistics, feature engineering LLMs, embeddings, fine-tuning basics, RAG, evaluation, agents Compare a fine-tuned small model vs a prompted large model on accuracy and cost
Cloud & DevOps AWS / Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, monitoring Deploying LLM apps, Bedrock / Azure OpenAI, GPU and cost management, LLMOps monitoring Deploy a RAG app with logging, rate limits and a monthly cost report
UI/UX Design Research, wireframing, Figma, design systems AI-assisted research synthesis, rapid prototyping with AI, designing conversational and AI-first interfaces Design the user flow for an AI assistant, including what happens when it is wrong
Digital Marketing SEO, Meta / Google Ads, content, analytics AI copywriting at scale, AI creatives, GEO (getting cited in AI answers), AI-driven audience and campaign analysis Run 20 ad variants built with AI and report which one converts and why

Naukri reports that Product Management, Data Science and Analytics, and Engineering, Software and QA are the functions where professionals rely most heavily on AI in daily work (Free Press Journal). Those are exactly the tracks where a non-AI profile will fall behind fastest.

04 · Emerging Job Roles and Salary Ranges in India

Gen AI skills add a measurable premium: Gen AI, LLM fine-tuning, MLOps and AI-agent skills command roughly 25–45% more than base AI engineering pay (Taggd). At 1–3 years of experience, an LLM application engineer earns roughly 40–60% more than a traditional ML engineer (Scaler).

Role Typical experience Indicative salary range Core skills
Gen AI / LLM Application Engineer 1–3 years ₹12–25 LPA Python, LLM APIs, RAG, vector DBs, prompt design
ML / Gen AI Engineer 2–5 years ₹18–35 LPA Python, ML, LLMs, embeddings, fine-tuning, evaluation
AI Product Manager 3–6 years ₹20–40 LPA Product sense, AI use-case scoping, ROI, data literacy
AI QA / SDET 2–5 years ₹10–22 LPA Playwright/Selenium, AI test generation, LLM feature testing
AI Business Analyst 2–5 years ₹10–20 LPA Requirements, KPIs, AI-assisted documentation, ROI

Indicative ranges compiled from Taggd, Scaler and ITM/Glassdoor 2026 salary data. Pay varies by city, company type and portfolio strength.

05 · The 90-Day Gen AI Roadmap for Students

One hour a day for 90 days takes you from "I use ChatGPT" to "I build with AI and can prove it". Tick each item as you finish it.

  • 1

Days 1–30: AI literacy and daily use
Learn how LLMs work at a concept level: tokens, context window, temperature, hallucination. Practise structured prompting: role, context, task, format, examples. Use an AI assistant every day for your current coursework (analysis, code, test cases or content). Learn Python basics if you do not have them: variables, lists, functions, files, APIs. Read your company's or institute's AI usage policy; learn what data you must never paste into AI tools. Milestone: a prompt library of 25 prompts for your career track, saved on GitHub or Notion.

  • 2

    Days 31–60: Build with AI
Call an LLM API from Python or JavaScript. Learn embeddings and build a simple RAG app over your own PDFs or notes. Use an AI coding assistant to build, debug and document a small project. Apply AI inside your track: Copilot in Power BI, AI test generation in Playwright, AI ad creatives, and so on. Learn to check AI output: fact-check, test edge cases, measure accuracy on 20 sample questions. Milestone: one working AI project deployed with a public link.

  • 3

    Days 61–90: Go job-ready
Build a simple AI agent that uses at least one tool (search, database, calculator or API). Add cost, speed and accuracy numbers to your project README. Learn the basics of responsible AI: bias, privacy, prompt injection, copyright. Rewrite your resume and LinkedIn with AI projects and measurable results. Practise interview questions on LLMs, RAG and AI in your track. Milestone: 2–3 portfolio projects, an updated resume, and 30 applications sent.

  • 06 · Portfolio Projects That Get You Hired

Recruiters skip "ChatGPT clone" projects. They shortlist projects that solve a real business problem and show numbers.

Project Best for Skills it proves What makes it stand out
Chat with company documents (RAG) Full stack, data science LLM API, embeddings, vector DB, UI Cites the source page for every answer; accuracy measured on 30 test questions
AI sales or HR insights dashboard Data / business analytics SQL, Power BI, LLM summaries Plain-English "what changed this week" summary generated on every refresh
AI test-case generator and chatbot test suite Automation testing / SDET Playwright, LLM prompts, assertions Tests the bot's answers for correctness, tone and prompt-injection, not just the UI
Customer review sentiment analyser Data analytics, data science Python, LLM classification, charts Compares LLM labels with manual labels and reports agreement %
Job-application helper agent Full stack, data science Agents, tools, APIs Reads a job post, tailors a resume, tracks applications
Deployed LLM app with monitoring Cloud & DevOps Docker, cloud AI service, logging Shows cost per 1,000 queries and response-time dashboard
AI-first app redesign case study UI/UX Research, Figma, AI prototyping Covers error states: what users see when the AI is wrong
AI-powered ad campaign test Digital marketing AI copy and creative, Meta Ads, analytics Real spend, real CTR and CPL, with a clear winner and why

Checklist for every project: a live link, a clear README, a 2-minute demo video, the problem in one sentence, and at least one number (accuracy, time saved, cost, conversion).

    07 · Myths vs Reality

AI will not take your job by itself. A person who uses AI well can take it, and employers are already restructuring around that.

    Myth Reality
"AI will replace all IT jobs." WEF projects 170 million jobs created and 92 million displaced by 2030, a net gain of 78 million. Routine tasks shrink; AI-skilled roles grow.
"Gen AI is only for AI engineers." AI skills raise median pay in both IT and non-IT roles (Naukri via FPJ). Analysts, testers and marketers benefit directly.
"Prompt engineering alone is a career." Prompting is now a baseline skill. Jobs pay for prompting plus a core skill: data, code, testing, design or marketing.
"I need a PhD or heavy maths." Building Gen AI apps needs Python, APIs and logic. Deep maths matters for research roles, not most application roles.
"Using AI is cheating." Employers expect it. The skill being tested is judgment: knowing when AI is wrong.
"A certificate is enough." About 20 lakh people are upskilled, but only about 3 lakh have advanced skills. Projects separate you.

Most at risk: roles built on repeatable text and screen work. WEF names graphic designers and legal secretaries among the fastest-declining roles, and expects bank tellers, cashiers and administrative assistants to decline. In IT, pure manual testing, basic report-making and template coding are under the most pressure.

Most in demand: AI and ML specialists, big data specialists and software developers top WEF's fastest-growing list. Close to 70% of companies plan to hire people who can design and improve AI tools, and 62% want people who can work effectively alongside AI.
