Software Testing Skills & Salary Report 2026

In 2026, the testing job market has split in two: manual-only testers sit at 3–6 LPA, while automation engineers and SDETs who code, use AI tools and own CI/CD pipelines earn 8–30 LPA, with top product companies paying far more. Playwright is now the default for new projects, Selenium still holds enterprise suites, and AI-assisted testing is fast becoming an expected skill.

22.1%Selenium adoption in 2026 benchmark (ContextQA)
25xPlaywright npm download growth since 2022 (TestDino)
50M+Selenium monthly PyPI downloads (TestDino)

Demand has shifted from "who can test" to "who can automate"

Companies ship weekly or daily, so every release needs an automated regression suite running in CI/CD. A 2026 benchmark across 300+ test suites put Playwright at 45.1% adoption, Selenium at 22.1% and Cypress at 14.4% (ContextQA). Other surveys still give Selenium around 39% of the overall installed base (TestQuality). Both are true: Playwright wins new projects; Selenium holds legacy suites.

Playwright went from about 500K weekly npm downloads in early 2021 to around 35 million in early 2026 (TestDino). Selenium still pulls about 50 million monthly PyPI downloads and shipped v4.41 in February 2026, so it is actively maintained. Live job posts from Capgemini, Birlasoft and Virtusa now ask for Playwright with Python, Page Object Model, API testing and basic AI tool usage alongside Selenium.

Recruiters screen first for coding ability (JavaScript/TypeScript, Python or Java), then framework depth, then CI/CD and API testing. AI-assisted testing is fast becoming an expected skill rather than a bonus.

02 · Salary Benchmarks 2026

The gap widens with experience

At 5–7 years a manual tester earns 7–14 LPA, an automation engineer 14–24 LPA and an SDET 20–36 LPA, and the gap keeps widening with experience. Manual pay is growing only 5–8% a year while automation and SDET pay grows 12–18% a year (Instahyre).

Employer type Fresher 3 years
IT services (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, etc.) 4–6 LPA 8–13 LPA

12+ yrs 12–22 LPA 22–38 LPA 35–60 LPA+

SDETs earn roughly 2.7x manual testers by 5–7 years. Manual pay is growing only 5–8% a year while automation and SDET pay grows 12–18% a year.

03 · Playwright + AI · The strongest bet for a new automation career

Playwright with TypeScript is the strongest single bet for a new automation career in 2026: it is the framework most new projects choose, and Playwright's built-in AI agents work natively in TypeScript. Salary (India, all Playwright engineers): median about 10.6 LPA, rising from roughly 6.8 LPA at 0–2 years to 28.9 LPA at 12+ years (Flexiple, Aug 2026). By city, medians run from about 8.5 LPA in Chennai to 14.7 LPA in Bengaluru.

Why demand is growing AI features students must know
Auto-waiting cuts flaky tests sharply versus Selenium, and tests run faster without a WebDriver layer. Playwright Test Agents (v1.56+): three AI agents — a Planner that explores the app and writes a Markdown test plan, a Generator that turns the plan into TypeScript tests and checks selectors live, and a Healer that repairs failing tests and re-runs them. Set up with npx playwright init-agents.
One framework covers Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, plus API testing, mobile emulation and visual comparisons. Playwright MCP server: lets AI assistants (Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) drive a real browser through the page's accessibility tree rather than screenshots.
Front-end teams already write JavaScript/TypeScript, so developers and testers share one codebase. AI coding assistants for writing Page Objects, fixtures, test data and assertions, and for explaining trace-viewer failures.

Typical job titles: QA Automation Engineer (Playwright), SDET, Quality Engineer, Front-end Test Engineer.

Core skill stack (Playwright + TypeScript)

1 JavaScript fundamentals, then TypeScript (types, async/await, classes, modules)
2 Playwright Test: locators, auto-wait, assertions, fixtures, hooks, projects, parallel runs
3 Page Object Model and a reusable framework structure
4 API testing with request context; mocking and network interception
5 Trace Viewer, HTML/Allure reports, screenshots and video on failure
6 CI/CD with GitHub Actions or Jenkins; Docker basics; Git
7 AI layer: Test Agents, Playwright MCP, prompt-writing for test generation, and human review of AI output

04 · Playwright with Python + AI · Best for Python-native students

Playwright with Python is the best route for students who already know Python or want to stay close to data, backend and AI work; Indian employers are actively hiring for it.

Company Role Experience Est. salary Key requirements
Capgemini, Bengaluru UI Automation Engineer (Python, Playwright) 2–5 years ₹6–12 LPA 2–3 portfolio projects built with Python + Playwright
Birlasoft, Bengaluru QA Automation Engineer 7–8 years — Playwright with Python, POM, fixtures, hooks, test-data management
Virtusa, Chennai QA Playwright Automation 2+ years ₹8–12 LPA Selenium, TestNG, Playwright, Java/Python, basic AI tool knowledge

AI angle for Python testers

Use the Playwright MCP server with any AI assistant to explore pages and draft tests. Note: Playwright's built-in Planner/Generator/Healer agents target Node.js (TypeScript/JavaScript) and do not plug directly into pytest. Python testers get AI help through MCP, Copilot/Claude-style assistants and custom scripts. Python is the language of LLM evaluation, so it is the natural bridge to AI/ML model testing — the highest-premium specialization in QA today.

Core skill stack (Playwright + Python)

1 Python fundamentals: functions, OOP, exceptions, virtual environments, pip
2 pytest: fixtures, parametrization, markers, conftest, pytest-playwright plugin
3 Playwright for Python (sync and async APIs), locators, assertions, tracing
4 Page Object Model; data-driven tests from CSV/JSON/Excel
5 API testing with Playwright APIRequestContext or requests
6 Allure reporting, GitHub Actions/Jenkins, Docker
7 AI layer: MCP-driven test drafting, prompt patterns, basic LLM evaluation (accuracy, hallucination checks)

05 · Selenium Automation with AI · Still the largest job pool

Selenium remains the largest job pool in Indian testing, and adding AI self-healing and AI-assisted coding keeps a Selenium tester relevant and better paid. Salary (India, all Selenium engineers): median about ₹8 LPA, growing roughly 6x from ₹4.9 LPA at 0–2 years to ₹29.8 LPA at 12+ years (Flexiple, Aug 2026). There are over 4.2 lakh Selenium profiles in India — a huge pool, which is why the entry-level median sits below Playwright's.

Where Selenium still dominates

  • Banks, insurers, telecom and large IT services accounts with years of Java + TestNG suites
  • Projects needing many languages (Java, Python, C#, Ruby, JavaScript) and older browsers
  • Selenium Grid and cloud grids (BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, LambdaTest) at enterprise scale
  • Active development continues: v4.41 shipped in February 2026, and Selenium still pulls about 50 million monthly PyPI downloads

AI features students must know

Self-healing locators with Healenium: an open-source library that wraps WebDriver and swaps broken locators at runtime when the UI changes; it works with Java Selenium and Appium. Healenium Pro adds AI locator fixes as GitHub pull requests and now supports Playwright too. AI coding assistants to generate Page Objects, TestNG data providers, waits and Cucumber step definitions, and to migrate Selenium tests to Playwright. Commercial AI platforms built on Selenium concepts (Katalon, Testim, mabl) for code-less and self-healing tests.

Core skill stack (Selenium + Java)

1 Core Java (OOP, collections, exceptions) — still the most-asked Selenium language
2 Selenium WebDriver 4: locators, waits, actions, windows/frames, Selenium Manager
3 TestNG/JUnit, Maven, Page Object Model + Page Factory
4 BDD with Cucumber; data-driven frameworks (Excel, JSON)
5 REST Assured for API testing; SQL basics
6 Jenkins/GitHub Actions, Selenium Grid, Docker, Extent/Allure reports
7 AI layer: Healenium self-healing, AI-assisted script writing, Selenium-to-Playwright migration

Honest view: Selenium alone is now the baseline, not a differentiator. Pair it with Java depth, API automation and one AI skill to move above the median.

06 · Playwright vs Selenium at a glance

Choose Playwright for new projects and product companies; choose Selenium for enterprise and IT services roles — and know both if you want the widest job choice.

Factor Playwright (JS/TS/Python) Selenium (Java/Python)
India median salary ≈ ₹10.6 LPA ≈ ₹8 LPA
0–2 years median ≈ ₹6.8 LPA ≈ ₹4.9 LPA
12+ years median ≈ ₹28.9 LPA ≈ ₹29.8 LPA
Talent pool in India Smaller (<=40K profiles) Very large (<=4.2 lakh profiles)
New-project adoption (2026 survey) ≈ 45% ≈ 22%
Waiting / flakiness Built-in auto-wait; fewer flaky tests Manual waits; timing is the top flakiness cause
Speed Faster; no WebDriver layer Slower; WebDriver protocol
Built-in AI Planner, Generator, Healer agents + MCP (TS/JS) Via add-ons: Healenium, AI assistants, vendor tools
API testing Built in Usually REST Assured
Typical employers Product companies, startups, GCCs Banks, insurers, IT services, legacy enterprise
Best for Freshers, career switchers, JS/Python developers Java learners, enterprise and service-company roles

Salary and pool figures: Flexiple Playwright, Flexiple Selenium. Adoption: ContextQA. At senior levels the two converge, because pay then depends on framework design, CI/CD ownership and leadership more than on the tool.

07 · AI in Testing · Tools, Roles and Premiums

AI is taking over repetitive test writing and locator maintenance, so the tester's value is moving to test design, review of AI output, framework ownership and testing AI products themselves.

Task AI tools used in 2026 What the human still owns
Test planning Playwright Planner agent, Claude, ChatGPT Business risk, coverage decisions
Writing test code Playwright Generator, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor Code review, framework design
Fixing broken tests Playwright Healer, Healenium, Testim, mabl Deciding if a failure is a real bug
Browser exploration Playwright MCP server Validating what the agent did
Test data and edge cases LLM prompts Data privacy, realism
Testing AI features LLM evaluation scripts in Python Accuracy, hallucination, bias and prompt-injection checks

Specialization premiums (India, over a generalist SDET)

  • AI/ML model testing: +30% to +50% — the newest and fastest-rising premium
  • Security testing: +30% to +50%
  • Test platform engineering: +25% to +45%
  • Performance engineering (k6, JMeter, Gatling): +25% to +40%
  • Mobile automation (Appium): +20% to +35%
  • Generalist Selenium/Cypress: baseline
  • Manual testing only: −25% to −40%

New and growing roles: AI-assisted SDET, AI Quality Engineer, LLM/GenAI Test Engineer, Test Platform Engineer, Quality Architect.

Reality check for students: AI tools make a good tester faster; they do not make an untrained person a tester. Expect interviewers to hand you AI-generated test code and ask what is wrong with it, so fundamentals matter more, not less.

08 · Skill Roadmap by Career Stage

The fastest salary jump comes from moving from manual execution to coded automation; Instahyre estimates this build takes 12–24 months of steady effort and is the highest-leverage move in QA.

  • 1

Freshers and graduates (target: 4–9 LPA first offer)
Months 1–2: manual testing basics (SDLC/STLC, test cases, bug reports, Jira) + one language (TypeScript or Python; Java if aiming at IT services). Months 3–4: Playwright framework with POM, API tests, reports. Month 5: Git, GitHub Actions CI pipeline, Docker basics. Month 6: AI layer (Playwright agents/MCP, AI-assisted coding) + 2–3 GitHub portfolio projects. Add Selenium + Java basics to qualify for service-company drives too.

  • 2

Career switchers (non-IT or non-QA background)
Start with Python + Playwright: the shortest path to working tests. Lean on your domain (banking, healthcare, retail) — domain testers are valued in GCCs and product teams. Build a portfolio that tests a real public site end to end; it outweighs certificates in interviews.

  • 3

Working manual testers (target: 30–80% hike on switch)
Keep your domain and test-design strength; add one language to coding depth, not just scripting. Automate your own project's regression suite first — real impact is the best interview story. Then add CI/CD and one specialization (API, performance, mobile or AI testing).

  • 4

Automation engineers with 2–5 years (target: SDET bands)
Own a framework end to end: design, CI, parallel runs, reporting, flaky-test control. Learn Playwright if you only know Selenium (and vice versa). Pick one premium specialization: AI/LLM testing, performance or security.

  • Salary levers fresher offers respond to most

    • A self-built automation framework with portfolio: +25–40%
    • Programming depth: +20–30%
    • CI/CD knowledge: +15–25%
    • Performance testing: +20–35%
    • Mobile automation: +20–30%

    09 · Interview-Ready Checklist and Portfolio Projects

A candidate who can show a working framework on GitHub and explain every design choice beats a candidate with more certificates.

    Self-check before you apply

    • Write locators without XPath crutches (role, text, test-id) and explain why they are stable
    • Explain auto-wait in Playwright vs explicit/fluent waits in Selenium
    • Build a Page Object Model framework from an empty folder
    • Write API tests (GET/POST/PUT/DELETE, auth tokens, schema checks)
    • Run tests in parallel and across browsers; read a Playwright trace
    • Set up a GitHub Actions or Jenkins pipeline that runs tests on every push
    • Generate a test with AI (Playwright agents, MCP or an assistant) and fix what it got wrong
    • Explain one self-healing approach (Playwright Healer or Healenium) and its risks
    • Solve basic coding questions: strings, arrays, maps, sorting
    • Write SQL queries for test-data validation
    • Explain one flaky test you fixed and how

    Portfolio projects that impress recruiters

    1. E-commerce end-to-end suite (Playwright + TypeScript): login, search, cart, checkout on a demo store; POM, fixtures, API setup, CI on GitHub Actions, HTML report published.
    2. AI-generated suite with human review: use Playwright Planner/Generator on a public app, then document every fix you made to the AI output — this shows AI skill and judgment together.
    3. Selenium + Java + Cucumber BDD framework with Healenium: show a locator change being healed in the report.
    4. Python + Playwright + pytest API and UI hybrid: data-driven tests from JSON, Allure report, Docker run.
    5. LLM chatbot test harness (Python): check a chatbot's answers for accuracy, refusal behaviour and prompt-injection — an entry ticket to the AI testing premium.
    6. Selenium-to-Playwright migration: convert 10 Selenium tests and publish before/after run times and flakiness.

Sources and how to read the numbers

All salaries are annual CTC in India (LPA = lakh per annum) unless marked; different sources measure differently, so treat every figure as a range, not a promise. Flexiple uses self-disclosed CTC (Aug 2026); InstaHyre uses its own offer data across 8,000+ tech roles (May 2026); Payscale reports base pay, which runs lower than CTC. Actual offers depend on skills, interview performance, city and company.
