How to become an
Automation Test Engineer in India.

An Automation Test Engineer writes code that tests software — Selenium or Playwright scripts that check whether an application behaves correctly, run automatically on every code change. In India, the role typically requires 5–7 months of focused learning for a fresher. Indeed reports an average salary of ₹6,17,659 for Automation Test Engineers in India (93 salaries, updated 1 Oct 2026).

Role overview

What is an Automation Test Engineer?

An Automation Test Engineer is a software tester who writes code to test software. Instead of clicking through an application manually every time a developer changes something, they write scripts — using tools like Selenium or Playwright — that open the application, perform the same actions a user would, and check whether the result is correct. Those scripts run automatically in a CI/CD pipeline, catching regressions before they reach users.

The role is not the same as manual testing, although most automation engineers start by learning manual testing concepts. Automation is code-heavy: you need to be comfortable reading and writing Java, JavaScript or Python, working with Git, and understanding how applications and APIs are structured. The career path often leads to SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) roles.

Role Automation Test Engineer
Typical entry route B.Tech / BCA / MCA / any graduate + manual testing basics + coding + frameworks
Core skills Manual testing, Java or JavaScript, Selenium or Playwright, TestNG/Mocha, POM frameworks, API testing, Git, CI/CD
Main tools Selenium, Playwright, TestNG, Maven, Postman, REST Assured, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Allure
Coding level Moderate to strong — you write test code daily
India salary Indeed: avg ₹6,17,659 (93 salaries, updated 1 Oct 2026)

Day to day

What does an Automation Test Engineer do?

A typical day for an Automation Test Engineer in an Indian product or services company involves a mix of writing test code, reviewing failures and coordinating with developers. These are the tasks that come up most often.

01

Write and maintain automated test scripts

Write Selenium or Playwright tests for new features, and update existing tests when the UI or API changes.

02

Design and improve test frameworks

Build or extend the Page Object Model, add utilities for waits, data handling and reporting, and keep the framework maintainable.

03

Run and triage test suites

Investigate failed tests — decide whether the failure is a real bug, a flaky test, or an environment issue — and fix or report accordingly.

04

Automate API tests

Write Postman collections or REST Assured tests to check API responses, status codes, schemas and error handling.

05

Integrate tests with CI/CD

Hook the test suite into Jenkins or GitHub Actions so tests run automatically on every pull request and block bad builds.

06

Review test coverage

Track which parts of the application are covered and which are not, and add tests for the gaps that matter most.

07

Coordinate with developers and QA

Reproduce reported bugs, agree on test data, and align on what "done" means for a feature before it ships.

08

Report results and metrics

Share pass/fail summaries, coverage and defect trends with the team using Allure, TestNG reports or dashboards.

Automation Test Engineers work closely with manual testers, software developers, product managers and DevOps engineers. In India, the industries hiring most actively are IT services, SaaS product companies, fintech, e-commerce, edtech and healthtech.

03
Skills

Automation Test Engineer skills you need

The technical skills below are the ones that appear most often in Automation Test Engineer job descriptions in India. The level column tells you how deep you need to go for a fresher or entry-level role.

Technical skills — why they matter and the level needed
Skill Why it matters Level needed
Manual testing fundamentals Test cases, test scenarios, bug reporting, severity, regression. Automation is built on top of this. Strong
Java (or JavaScript/TypeScript) Selenium is most commonly used with Java; Playwright with JavaScript/TypeScript. Pick one and go deep. Strong in one
Selenium WebDriver The most widely used browser automation tool in Indian job descriptions. Strong
Playwright Newer, faster, built-in waits and API testing. Growing fast in product companies. Working
TestNG / JUnit / Mocha Test runners — organise tests, group them, run in parallel, report results. Working
Page Object Model (POM) Standard framework pattern that keeps tests readable and maintainable. Working
API testing (Postman, REST Assured) Most bugs live below the UI. API tests run fast and catch issues early. Working
Git & GitHub Branching, pull requests, resolving conflicts. Used daily. Working
CI/CD (Jenkins, GitHub Actions) Automating test runs on every commit so regressions are caught immediately. Basic–Working
SQL basics Verifying data written by the application and preparing test data. Basic
Maven / npm Dependency and build management for Java and JS test projects. Basic
Reporting (Allure, Extent) Making test results readable for the team and for stakeholders. Basic
Soft skills employers look for
Skill Why it matters
Attention to detail Tests are only useful if they check the right thing — small oversights hide real bugs.
Debugging mindset Distinguishing a real bug from a flaky test or environment issue is a daily task.
Communication Reproducing bugs clearly for developers saves the whole team time.
Patience with repetition Automation is iterative — tests break, tools update, and frameworks need upkeep.
Ownership of quality Treating test failures as important signals rather than noise.
04
The roadmap

How to become an Automation Test Engineer: step-by-step roadmap

The roadmap below is the order that works for most learners in India — manual testing first, then one language, then one automation tool, then framework design, API testing and CI/CD. The time estimates assume 2–3 focused hours per day.

1

Manual testing foundations

Test cases, test scenarios, defect life cycle, severity vs priority, regression, smoke and sanity testing. Practise writing clear bug reports.

3 weeks
2

One programming language — Java or JavaScript/TypeScript

Variables, loops, arrays, collections, functions, classes and OOP basics. Java if you want Selenium with the widest job pool; JavaScript/TypeScript if you want Playwright.

6 weeks
3

Selenium WebDriver with TestNG, or Playwright with its test runner

Locators, waits, handling frames/windows/alerts, file uploads, screenshots. TestNG annotations and assertions, or Playwright fixtures and expect assertions.

6 weeks
4

Framework design — Page Object Model, data-driven, reporting

Build a reusable framework: page classes, a base test class, config files, test data handling and Allure or Extent reporting.

3 weeks
5

API automation — Postman, REST Assured or Playwright API testing

Send requests, validate status codes and JSON schemas, chain requests, and integrate API tests into the same framework.

3 weeks
6

CI/CD — Git, GitHub Actions or Jenkins

Push your test project to GitHub, then set up a pipeline that runs the tests on every commit and publishes the report.

2 weeks
7

AI-assisted testing tools (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) responsibly

Use AI to draft test steps, generate test data or suggest locators — but review everything. Never trust AI-generated assertions without checking them.

1 week
8

Build 2 frameworks on GitHub; resume and interviews

Ship two complete test frameworks with README, live reports and CI runs. Prepare for interviews on Java, Selenium, framework design and API testing.

4–6 weeks

Total realistic timeline for a fresher studying 2–3 hours a day: about 5–7 months. The single biggest predictor of getting hired is a GitHub repository with a real, working test framework — not the number of certificates.

05
Qualifications

Qualifications: degrees, non-IT graduates and certifications

Automation testing is one of the more accessible IT careers because employers care more about the frameworks you can build than which degree you hold. That said, some qualifications still help in India — especially for campus placements and larger companies.

Which degrees and certifications help
Qualification How much it helps Notes
B.Tech / BE (CS, IT, ECE) Strong for campus and large-company hiring Most common route for freshers at product companies.
BCA / MCA Strong for IT services and mid-size companies MCA is often treated as equivalent to B.Tech for engineer roles.
B.Sc / M.Sc (CS, Maths, Stats) Moderate — depends on portfolio Portfolio and internships matter more than the degree name.
Non-IT graduates (Commerce, Arts, etc.) Possible — portfolio is decisive Build 2 working frameworks and be ready to explain your switch in interviews.
ISTQB certification Helpful add-on A well-known vendor certification. Fees vary — check the vendor site.
Uncodemy Automation Testing certificate Verifiable proof of training Verifiable at certificate.uncodemy.com.

Portfolio

Projects to build for your portfolio

Your portfolio is what gets you interviews. The five projects below cover the range of skills employers test — Selenium, Playwright, frameworks, API automation and CI/CD. Each one should have a public GitHub repo with a clear README and a CI badge.

01

Selenium + TestNG framework for a public demo site

Page Object Model framework that tests login, search, cart and checkout flows on a public e-commerce demo site.

Java Selenium TestNG Maven Allure
What it proves to an employer You can design a maintainable test framework, not just write one-off scripts.
02

Playwright framework with API and UI tests

TypeScript Playwright project that tests both the UI and the API of the same application, with fixtures and parallel runs.

TypeScript Playwright GitHub Actions Allure
What it proves to an employer You can work with modern tooling and test across layers.
03

API automation suite with REST Assured

Test suite covering CRUD endpoints of a public API, including authentication, schema validation and error cases.

Java REST Assured TestNG Maven
What it proves to an employer You understand API contracts, auth flows and negative testing.
04

CI/CD pipeline with Jenkins or GitHub Actions

A test project wired into CI so the suite runs automatically on every push, publishes reports, and fails the build on test failure.

GitHub Actions Jenkins Selenium Allure
What it proves to an employer You can connect testing to the delivery pipeline, not run tests by hand.
05

Data-driven test framework with Excel or JSON

Framework that reads test data from Excel or JSON files and runs the same test with many input combinations.

Java Apache POI TestNG DataProvider
What it proves to an employer You can scale a suite without duplicating test code.

Interview prep

Automation Test Engineer interview questions

These are the eight questions that come up most often in entry-level automation testing interviews in India. The answers below are short model answers — expand them with examples from your own projects.

Q1 What is the difference between manual testing and automation testing?

Manual testing is a person executing test cases by hand and judging results. Automation testing is code executing the same steps and asserting the result. Automation is faster for regression and repetitive tests; manual testing is better for exploratory and usability checks.

Q2 What are the different types of waits in Selenium?

Implicit wait applies a default timeout to all element lookups. Explicit wait waits for a specific condition on a specific element using WebDriverWait. Fluent wait is an explicit wait with polling interval and ignored exceptions.

Q3 What is the Page Object Model?

POM is a design pattern where each page of the application is represented by a class. The class contains the locators and the actions for that page. Tests call methods on the page object instead of using locators directly, which keeps tests readable and maintainable.

Q4 What is the difference between Selenium and Playwright?

Selenium is older and supports more languages and browsers; it is the most widely used in Indian job descriptions. Playwright is newer, faster, has built-in waits, auto-wait for elements and includes API testing in the same tool. Playwright is growing fast in product companies.

Q5 How do you handle dynamic elements?

Use relative locators or XPath functions like contains, starts-with or text() instead of hard-coded IDs. Add explicit waits for the element to be present or clickable. If IDs change, ask developers to add stable test attributes like data-testid.

Q6 What is the difference between a hard assert and a soft assert?

A hard assert stops the test immediately if the condition fails. A soft assert records the failure and continues, so you see all failures in one run. Soft asserts are useful when you want to check multiple independent things in a single test.

Q7 How would you test an API?

Send requests with Postman or REST Assured to each endpoint, verify the status code, response body and schema, and test both happy paths and error cases (missing auth, invalid data, 404s). Chain requests when one call depends on another, and include the API tests in CI.

Q8 What is an SDET?

SDET stands for Software Development Engineer in Test. An SDET does everything a test automation engineer does but also builds testing tools and frameworks used by the wider team, and contributes to production code where needed. SDET roles usually require stronger coding skills.

10
Growth

Career path and growth

Automation testing is a strong starting point because it exposes you to both code and product thinking. From here you can specialise in test architecture, DevOps, or move into SDET and quality engineering leadership. Typical titles over time:

0–6 months. Learning manual testing and writing simple automation scripts.

02

Junior Automation Test Engineer

0–2 years. Writes and maintains tests within an existing framework.

03

Automation Test Engineer

2–4 years. Owns test suites, improves the framework, integrates with CI.

04

Senior Automation Engineer / SDET

4–7 years. Designs frameworks, builds test tooling, mentors juniors.

05

Lead SDET / Test Architect

7+ years. Sets test strategy across teams and owns quality standards.

06

Quality Engineering Manager

8+ years. Leads QA/SDET teams and partners with product and engineering leadership.

Many Automation Test Engineers also move into DevOps, Platform Engineering or Software Development. For a related path, see the Software Test Engineer career guide.
