How to become a
Software Test Engineer in India.

A Software Test Engineer checks whether software works as intended — finding bugs before users do. They write test cases, report defects, verify fixes and increasingly write automation scripts. In India, the role typically requires 4–6 months of focused learning for a fresher. Indeed reports an average salary of ₹9,17,316 for Software Test Engineers in India (296 salaries, updated 3 Oct 2026).

Role overview

What is a Software Test Engineer?

A Software Test Engineer is a quality professional who checks whether software behaves the way it is supposed to. They read the requirements, design test cases that cover normal and edge cases, execute those tests on the application, and report any defect they find with clear steps to reproduce it. They also verify that bugs fixed by developers are actually fixed, and they run regression tests to make sure nothing else broke.

The role has three tracks in India: manual testing (executing test cases by hand, strong foundations), automation testing (writing Selenium or Playwright scripts), and SDET (building test frameworks and tools). Most freshers start with manual testing and add automation within the first year. This guide covers all three.

Role Software Test Engineer
Typical entry route B.Tech / BCA / MCA / any graduate + testing fundamentals + portfolio
Core skills Manual testing, test case design, JIRA, SQL, API testing, Selenium/Playwright basics
Main tools JIRA, TestRail, Postman, SQL, Selenium, Playwright, Git, Jenkins
Coding level Basic to moderate — grows with the automation track
India salary Indeed: avg ₹9,17,316 (296 salaries, updated 3 Oct 2026)
Related Uncodemy program Software Testing
Learning time (fresher) 4–6 months of consistent study
Note on salary: The figure above is from Indeed (296 salaries, updated 3 Oct 2026). Indeed also reports city-level averages: Mumbai ₹15.19L, Noida ₹14.83L, Gurgaon ₹11.30L, Hyderabad ₹10.71L and Pune ₹10.07L. Salaries vary by city, company, skills and experience. Day to day

What does a Software Test Engineer do?

A typical day for a Software Test Engineer in an Indian product or services company involves a mix of test execution, defect reporting and coordination with developers. These are the tasks that come up most often.

01

Read requirements and design test cases

Go through the user story or specification, identify what needs to be tested, and write test cases with clear steps and expected results.

02

Execute tests on the application

Run test cases manually or via automation, record pass/fail, and capture screenshots or logs when something fails.

03

Report defects in JIRA or similar

Log bugs with severity, priority, environment, steps to reproduce and expected vs actual behaviour.

04

Verify fixes and run regression

Re-test the fixed bug, then run the regression suite to confirm the change did not break existing behaviour.

05

Participate in Agile ceremonies

Stand-ups, sprint planning, backlog grooming and retrospectives — testers are part of the delivery team, not a separate silo.

06

Write and maintain automation scripts

As you grow, you write Selenium or Playwright scripts for the tests that will run again and again in CI.

07

Prepare test reports and metrics

Share pass rates, defect counts, coverage and release readiness with the team and stakeholders.

08

Collaborate with developers and product

Clarify ambiguous requirements, negotiate scope and priorities, and act as the quality voice in the team.

Software Test Engineers work closely with software developers, product managers, business analysts, automation engineers and DevOps engineers. In India, the industries hiring most actively are IT services, BFSI, SaaS product companies, e-commerce, healthcare and telecom.

03
Skills

Soft skills employers look for
Skill Why it matters
Attention to detail Finding bugs means noticing what most people miss.
Clear written communication A bug report is only useful if a developer can reproduce it without asking questions.
Curiosity Good testers ask "what if" and try to break things in unusual ways.
Patience Regression testing is repetitive, and it must be done well every time.
Collaboration Quality is a team outcome; testers work closely with developers and product.
04
The roadmap

How to become a Software Test Engineer: step-by-step roadmap

The roadmap below is the order that works for most learners in India — testing fundamentals first, then test case writing, then SQL and API testing, then automation basics. The time estimates assume 2–3 focused hours per day.

1

Testing fundamentals — SDLC, STLC, testing types

How software is built, where testing fits, and the main testing types: functional, regression, smoke, sanity, integration, UAT and exploratory.

3 weeks
2

Writing test scenarios, test cases, bug reports; JIRA

Practical writing skill — clear steps, expected results, severity vs priority. Practise logging bugs in JIRA or a similar tracker.

3 weeks
3

Agile and Scrum for testers

Sprints, stand-ups, backlog grooming, definition of done and how testers participate in each ceremony.

1 week
4

SQL for testers

SELECT, joins, filters, aggregates. Enough to verify that the application wrote the right data and to prepare test data.

3 weeks
5

API testing with Postman

Send GET/POST/PUT/DELETE requests, validate status codes and JSON, use environments and collections, and test auth flows.

3 weeks
6

Automation basics — Java/JavaScript + Selenium or Playwright

One language, then one automation tool. Locators, waits, basic assertions and a small test suite in Git. This is what moves you from manual to automation.

8 weeks
7

Practise on 2–3 real apps; build a testing portfolio

Test a live public application end to end. Publish test cases, bug reports and (if you did automation) a GitHub repo with a README.

2–3 weeks
8

Optional ISTQB Foundation; resume and interviews

ISTQB Foundation is a helpful add-on, not mandatory. Prepare for interviews on testing concepts, SQL, API and automation basics.

2–3 weeks

Total realistic timeline for a fresher studying 2–3 hours a day: about 4–6 months. The single biggest predictor of getting hired is a testing portfolio with real test cases, bug reports and a small automation repo — not the number of certificates.

05
Qualifications

Qualifications: degrees, non-IT graduates and certifications

Software testing is one of the more accessible IT careers because employers care more about your testing skills than which degree you hold. That said, some qualifications still help in India — especially for campus placements and larger companies.

Which degrees and certifications help
Qualification How much it helps Notes
B.Tech / BE (CS, IT, ECE) Strong for campus and large-company hiring Most common route for freshers at product companies.
BCA / MCA Strong for IT services and mid-size companies MCA is often treated as equivalent to B.Tech for engineer roles.
B.Sc / M.Sc (CS, Maths, Stats) Moderate — depends on portfolio Portfolio and internships matter more than the degree name.
Non-IT graduates (Commerce, Arts, etc.) Possible — very common in testing Testing is one of the most non-IT-friendly IT careers in India.
ISTQB Foundation certification Helpful add-on A well-known vendor certification. Fees vary — check the vendor site.
Uncodemy Software Testing certificate Verifiable proof of training Verifiable at certificate.uncodemy.com.
06

Portfolio

Projects to build for your portfolio

Your portfolio is what gets you interviews. The five projects below cover the range of skills employers test — manual testing, test case design, bug reports, SQL, API testing and automation. Each one should be documented in a Google Doc or GitHub repo with a clear README.

01

Test case suite for a live public app

Pick a public website (e-commerce, banking demo, travel). Write a full test case sheet covering sign-up, login, search, cart and checkout.

Manual testing Test cases Excel/Sheets
What it proves to an employer You can translate requirements into testable scenarios and document them clearly.
02

Bug report log for a live public app

Find 10–15 real defects on a public demo app and write proper bug reports: steps, severity, priority, screenshots.

Bug reporting JIRA Screenshots
What it proves to an employer You can actually find bugs and report them so they can be fixed without follow-up questions.
03

SQL validation queries

For the same application, write SQL queries that verify the data was written correctly after each user action.

SQL MySQL PostgreSQL
What it proves to an employer You can test beyond the UI and validate backend data.
04

Postman collection for a public API

Build a collection for a public API (weather, payments sandbox, booking) with valid and invalid requests, auth and environment variables.

Postman REST JSON
What it proves to an employer You can test APIs, not just UIs.
05

Small Selenium or Playwright suite on GitHub

Automate 5–10 regression tests on a public site, with a README explaining how to run them, and a report output.

Java or JS Selenium / Playwright TestNG Git
What it proves to an employer You can move beyond manual testing and write your own scripts.

09
Interview prep

Software Test Engineer interview questions

These are the eight questions that come up most often in entry-level software testing interviews in India. The answers below are short model answers — expand them with examples from your own projects.

Q1 What is the difference between SDLC and STLC?

SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) covers everything from gathering requirements to releasing and maintaining software. STLC (Software Testing Life Cycle) is the testing part of that — requirement analysis, test planning, test case design, test execution, defect reporting and closure.

Q2 What is the difference between severity and priority?

Severity is how badly the bug affects the system — a crash is high severity. Priority is how soon it should be fixed — a spelling error on the homepage can be low severity but high priority. Severity is technical; priority is business-driven.

Q3 What is the difference between smoke and sanity testing?

Smoke testing is a quick check that the build is stable enough to test — a shallow pass over major features. Sanity testing is a deeper, focused check on a specific area after a small change, to confirm the change works and nothing adjacent broke.

Q4 What is regression testing and when do you run it?

Regression testing re-runs existing tests to confirm that a new change did not break previously working features. It runs after every code change, before release, and after any environment or data change. Automation makes regression practical at scale.

Q5 What is the difference between black-box and white-box testing?

Black-box testing checks behaviour without looking at the code — the tester treats the application as a sealed box. White-box testing looks at the internal structure, code paths and logic. Functional testers mostly do black-box; developers and SDETs do more white-box.

Q6 How do you write a good bug report?

Include a clear title, the environment and build, exact steps to reproduce, expected vs actual result, severity and priority, and evidence (screenshot, log, video). A developer should be able to reproduce the bug from your report alone.

Q7 What is API testing and why does it matter?

API testing sends requests directly to the server and checks responses — status codes, body content, schema, error cases. It matters because many defects live below the UI, API tests run much faster than UI tests, and they can be executed before the UI is even ready.

Q8 What is the difference between a test plan and a test strategy?

A test strategy is a high-level document describing the overall approach, scope, tools and levels of testing for a project. A test plan is specific to one release or sprint — what will be tested, by whom, when, and with what data and environment.

10
Growth

Career path and growth

Software testing offers a clear growth path. You can stay on the manual/functional track and grow into QA leadership, move into automation, or specialise further as an SDET or performance engineer. Typical titles over time:

01

Test Engineer / Trainee

0–1 year. Executes tests, logs defects, learns the domain.

02

Software Test Engineer

1–3 years. Owns test cases for a module, writes automation scripts.

03

Senior Test Engineer

3–5 years. Leads testing for a feature area, reviews test cases, mentors juniors.

04

QA Lead / Test Lead

5–8 years. Owns test strategy for a project, manages a team of testers.

05

QA Manager / Test Manager

8+ years. Owns QA practice, budgets, hiring and process improvement.

06

SDET / Automation Architect / QA Director

Specialist or leadership routes at senior level.

Many Software Test Engineers also move into Automation Testing, SDET, DevOps or Business Analysis. For a related path, see the Automation Test Engineer career guide.

11
Fit check

Is Software Test Engineer a good career?

Software testing is a strong career for the right person, but it is not for everyone. Here is an honest look at the pros, the challenges and who tends to enjoy it.

Pros

Why people choose software testing

Accessible entry: Non-IT graduates can enter with focused training and a portfolio.

Clear learning path: Fundamentals, test design, SQL, API, automation — well-defined order.

Strong hiring demand: Every software company needs testers, in services and product.

Growth into automation and SDET: The manual track can lead to higher-paying automation roles within a few years.
Challenges

What to be ready for

Repetitive work: Regression testing is repetitive by design; you must stay disciplined.

Release pressure: Testers are often the last gate before release and absorb deadline pressure.

Automation is expected: Manual-only roles are shrinking; adding automation is not optional for growth.

Sometimes under-credited: Quality work is invisible when it succeeds — you need to be motivated by doing the work well, not by applause.

Who it suits: People who are detail-oriented, patient, methodical and enjoy finding what is wrong. If you like structured work, clear rules and improving quality, testing is a good fit. If you prefer building new features, a development role may suit you better.

12
Role comparison

Manual tester vs automation tester vs SDET

These three roles are often confused. In India, many testers start as manual testers and grow into automation or SDET. Here is how they usually differ.

Comparison — manual vs automation vs SDET
Factor Manual Tester Automation Tester SDET
Primary work Executes tests by hand, logs defects Writes Selenium/Playwright scripts, maintains suites Builds test frameworks and tools, contributes to code
Core skills Test design, domain knowledge, communication One language, one automation tool, framework basics Strong coding, architecture, CI/CD
Coding level Low (optional) Moderate Strong
Typical entry Fresher or non-IT graduate Manual tester with 1–2 years experience, or focused fresher Developer or automation engineer moving up
Where it leads QA lead, BA, domain specialist Senior automation, SDET Test architect, DevOps, engineering management
Reality in India Most freshers start manual and add automation within the first year. Pure manual roles are shrinking.
Start manual if…

You are new to IT

Manual testing builds the fundamentals — test design, bug reporting, domain knowledge — that automation cannot replace. Most Indian freshers still enter through this route.
Go automation or SDET if…

You want the higher-paying track

Automation and SDET roles pay significantly more and have better long-term growth. If you are comfortable with code, aim to move into automation within 12–18 months.
