01
Role overview

What is a DevOps Engineer?

A DevOps Engineer is a software engineer who focuses on how code gets built, tested, deployed and run. Instead of writing the product features themselves, they build the systems around the product — automated pipelines that test and ship code, cloud infrastructure that scales, containers that make environments consistent, and monitoring that catches problems before users do.

The role sits between development and operations. In India, most DevOps Engineers work with one cloud (AWS, Azure or GCP), one CI/CD tool (Jenkins or GitHub Actions), Docker and Kubernetes for containers, and Terraform or Ansible for infrastructure as code. Employers hire for the combination, not the title alone — which is why this guide covers the full learning order.

Role DevOps Engineer
Typical entry route B.Tech / BCA / MCA / any graduate + skills + projects
Core skills Linux, networking, Bash/Python, Git, AWS, Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible
Main tools Linux, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Terraform, Ansible, Prometheus, Grafana
Coding level Moderate — scripting-heavy, not feature development
India salary Indeed: avg ₹7,78,972 (274 salaries, updated 27 Sep 2026)
Related Uncodemy program DevOps Training
Learning time (fresher) 6–9 months of consistent study
Note on salary: The figure above is from Indeed (274 salaries, updated 27 Sep 2026). Indeed also reports city-level averages: Gurgaon ₹10.68L, Bengaluru ₹8.74L, Noida ₹8.43L and Pune ₹8.11L. Salaries vary by city, company, skills and experience. Uncodemy does not guarantee any salary.

Day to day

What does a DevOps Engineer do?

A typical day for a DevOps Engineer in an Indian product or services company involves a mix of automation work, incident response and collaboration with developers. These are the tasks that come up most often.

01

Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines

Write and fix Jenkins or GitHub Actions pipelines that build, test and deploy code whenever a developer pushes a change.

02

Manage cloud infrastructure

Provision and configure AWS, Azure or GCP resources — EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, load balancers, RDS — using the console and infrastructure-as-code tools.

03

Containerise and orchestrate

Write Dockerfiles, manage images, and run workloads on Kubernetes clusters — deployments, services, ingress, configmaps and secrets.

04

Write infrastructure as code

Define cloud resources in Terraform and server configuration in Ansible so environments are reproducible and version- controlled.

05

Monitor and alert

Set up Prometheus, Grafana and ELK dashboards, define alerts, and investigate spikes in latency, errors or resource usage.

06

Handle incidents and on-call

Respond to alerts, debug production issues with developers, and write post-mortems to prevent recurrence.

07

Improve security and cost

Apply least-privilege IAM, manage secrets, patch base images, and review cloud spend for waste.

08

Support developers

Help teams use the pipeline, fix build failures, and improve local-to-production parity with Docker.

DevOps Engineers work closely with software developers, QA engineers, system administrators, security teams and product managers. In India, the industries hiring most actively are IT services, SaaS product companies, fintech, e-commerce, edtech and healthtech.

03
Skills

DevOps Engineer skills you need

The technical skills below are the ones that appear most often in DevOps Engineer job descriptions in India. The level column tells you how deep you need to go for a fresher or entry-level role.

Technical skills — why they matter and the level needed
Skill Why it matters Level needed
Linux Almost every server, container and CI runner is Linux. File system, permissions, processes, systemd, logs. Strong
Networking basics DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, TCP/IP, load balancing, firewalls, subnets. Needed to debug connectivity. Working
Bash scripting Automating repetitive tasks, writing CI steps, glue scripts. Working
Python (basics) Automation scripts, cloud SDKs, small tools. More maintainable than long Bash scripts. Basic–Working
Git & GitHub Branching, pull requests, tags and releases. Used daily. Working
One cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP) Compute, storage, networking, IAM, databases. Go deep in one, not shallow in three. Strong in one
CI/CD (Jenkins/GitHub Actions) Automating build, test and deploy. The core of the role. Strong
Docker Packaging apps and dependencies into consistent images. Strong
Kubernetes Running containers at scale. Deployments, services, ingress, configmaps, secrets. Working
Terraform Defining cloud infrastructure as code so environments are reproducible. Working
Ansible Configuration management — installing packages, managing config files across servers. Basic–Working
Monitoring (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK) Knowing what is happening in production and alerting before users complain. Basic–Working
Soft skills employers look for
Skill Why it matters
Debugging mindset Most of the job is diagnosing why something is slow, failing or unreachable.
Calm under pressure Production incidents need methodical action, not panic.
Documentation habit Runbooks, architecture notes and post-mortems save the whole team time.
Communication with developers You need to explain pipeline and infrastructure decisions in plain language.
Continuous learning Cloud and DevOps tools change fast; reading release notes is part of the job.
04
The roadmap

How to become a DevOps Engineer: step-by-step roadmap

The roadmap below is the order that works for most learners in India — Linux first, then scripting, then one cloud, then CI/CD, then containers, then infrastructure as code and monitoring. The time estimates assume 2–3 focused hours per day.

1

Linux and networking basics

File system, permissions, users, processes, systemd, package managers, SSH, logs. Networking: DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, TCP/IP, subnets and firewalls.

4 weeks
2

Scripting — Bash and Python basics

Write Bash scripts for automation, then Python basics for more maintainable tools and cloud SDK usage.

3 weeks
3

Git and GitHub workflows

Branching, pull requests, tags, releases, resolving conflicts. Understand how a feature moves from branch to main to production.

1 week
4

One cloud — AWS fundamentals

EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, load balancers, RDS, CloudWatch. Learn the console first, then the CLI. Build a small app on EC2.

4 weeks
5

CI/CD with Jenkins or GitHub Actions

Write a pipeline that builds, tests and deploys a small app on every push. Add stages, environment secrets and rollback.

3 weeks
6

Containers — Docker, then Kubernetes

Write Dockerfiles, manage images, use Docker Compose. Then Kubernetes: pods, deployments, services, ingress, configmaps and secrets.

6 weeks
7

Infrastructure as code — Terraform; config management — Ansible

Define cloud resources in Terraform modules; manage server configuration with Ansible playbooks.

4 weeks
8

Monitoring — Prometheus, Grafana, ELK; build 3 projects; certifications and interviews

Set up dashboards and alerts, then build 3 end-to-end projects with live demos and clean repos. Prepare for interviews and apply.

4–6 weeks

Total realistic timeline for a fresher studying 2–3 hours a day: about 6–9 months. The single biggest predictor of getting hired is a portfolio of deployed, automated projects — not the number of certificates.

05
Qualifications

Qualifications: degrees, non-IT graduates and certifications

DevOps is one of the more accessible IT careers because employers care more about what you can automate and operate than which degree you hold. That said, some qualifications still help in India — especially for campus placements and larger companies.

Which degrees and certifications help
Qualification How much it helps Notes
B.Tech / BE (CS, IT, ECE) Strong for campus and large-company hiring Most common route for freshers at product companies.
BCA / MCA Strong for IT services and mid-size companies MCA is often treated as equivalent to B.Tech for engineer roles.
B.Sc / M.Sc (CS, Maths, Stats) Moderate — depends on portfolio Portfolio and internships matter more than the degree name.
Non-IT graduates (Commerce, Arts, etc.) Possible — portfolio is decisive Build 3 end-to-end automated projects and expect to explain your switch in interviews.
Vendor certifications (AWS, Azure, CKA, Terraform) Helpful add-on Use only well-known vendor certifications. Fees vary — check the vendor site.
Uncodemy DevOps certificate Verifiable proof of training Verifiable at certificate.uncodemy.com.
06
Toolbox

Tools a DevOps Engineer uses

These are the tools you will see in most DevOps Engineer job descriptions in India. You do not need to master all of them before your first job — but you should be comfortable with the ones marked "daily".

Grouped by category
Category Tools Usage
Operating system Linux (Ubuntu, Amazon Linux, CentOS) Daily
Version control Git, GitHub / GitLab / Bitbucket Daily
Cloud AWS (EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, RDS, CloudWatch); Azure or GCP as alternatives Daily

09
Interview prep

DevOps Engineer interview questions

These are the eight questions that come up most often in entry-level DevOps interviews in India. The answers below are short model answers — expand them with examples from your own projects.

Q1 What is DevOps?

DevOps is a way of working that brings development and operations together so software can be built, tested and released faster and more reliably. It is not a single tool — it is a combination of culture, automation, CI/CD, containers, cloud and monitoring.

Q2 What is CI/CD?

CI (Continuous Integration) means developers merge code frequently and every merge triggers an automated build and test. CD (Continuous Delivery/Deployment) means the tested code is automatically delivered to staging or production. Together they reduce manual release work and catch bugs early.

Q3 What is the difference between Docker and a virtual machine?

A virtual machine includes a full guest operating system and is heavy. A Docker container shares the host OS kernel and only packages the application and its dependencies, so it starts faster and uses fewer resources. Containers are lighter and more portable than VMs.

Q4 What is Kubernetes and why is it used?

Kubernetes is a container orchestration platform. It schedules containers across a cluster, restarts failed containers, scales replicas up or down, and provides service discovery, load balancing, configmaps and secrets. It is used to run containerised apps reliably at scale.

Q5 What is infrastructure as code?

Infrastructure as code means defining servers, networks, databases and other cloud resources in version-controlled files instead of clicking through a console. Tools like Terraform and CloudFormation read these files and create the resources, so environments are reproducible and auditable.

Q6 How would you troubleshoot a slow server?

Start with metrics — CPU, memory, disk I/O and network — using top, free, iostat or CloudWatch. Then check application logs and slow database queries. Identify whether the bottleneck is the server, the app or the database, and fix or scale the specific resource.

Q7 What is the difference between a blue-green deployment and a rolling deployment?

Blue-green keeps two identical environments — the old one (blue) and the new one (green). Traffic is switched to green once it is verified, and rollback is instant. Rolling replaces instances a few at a time within the same environment, which uses fewer resources but rolls back more slowly.

Q8 How do you manage secrets in a CI/CD pipeline?

Store secrets in a dedicated tool like HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager or the CI platform's encrypted secret store — never in the repository. Inject them at runtime as environment variables, restrict access by role, and rotate them regularly.

10
Growth

Career path and growth

DevOps is a strong starting point because it exposes you to the entire delivery chain — code, build, deploy, run and monitor. From here you can specialise in cloud, platform engineering, security or reliability. Typical titles over time:

01

Intern / Trainee DevOps Engineer

0–6 months. Learning pipelines and infrastructure with review from seniors.

02

Junior DevOps Engineer

0–2 years. Maintains pipelines, writes scripts, supports deployments.

03

DevOps Engineer

2–4 years. Owns CI/CD, cloud resources and monitoring for a product area.

04

Senior DevOps Engineer

4–7 years. Designs platforms, leads incident response, mentors juniors.

05

Lead DevOps / Platform Engineer

7+ years. Sets standards across teams and owns reliability.

06

Cloud Architect / SRE Lead

8+ years. Sets technical direction for cloud and reliability across products.

Many DevOps Engineers also move into Cloud Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, Platform Engineering or DevSecOps. For a development-focused path, see the Full Stack Developer career guide.

11
Fit check

Is DevOps Engineer a good career?

DevOps is a strong career for the right person, but it is not for everyone. Here is an honest look at the pros, the challenges and who tends to enjoy it.

Pros

Why people choose DevOps

High demand: Cloud and CI/CD are now standard in Indian product and services companies.

Clear learning path: The roadmap — Linux, scripting, cloud, CI/CD, containers, IaC, monitoring — is well-defined.

Transferable skills: Cloud, Docker and Kubernetes knowledge is useful in almost every modern software team.

Growth into architecture: Strong path from engineer to platform or cloud architect.
Challenges

What to be ready for

On-call: Production incidents happen outside office hours; you may carry a pager.

Breadth: You must be comfortable across Linux, cloud, containers, networking and scripting — not just one language.

Constant change: Cloud and DevOps tools evolve quickly; you will keep learning.

Less product ownership: You enable features rather than building them yourself.

Who it suits: People who enjoy systems thinking, debugging, automation and operations. If you like the idea of making software delivery faster and more reliable rather than writing user-facing features, DevOps is a good fit. If you prefer product work and deep focus on one language, a development role may suit you better.

12
Role comparison

DevOps engineer vs cloud engineer vs SRE

These three roles overlap and are often confused. In India, the same person may carry any of these titles depending on the company. Here is how they usually differ.

Comparison — DevOps Engineer vs Cloud Engineer vs SRE
Factor DevOps Engineer Cloud Engineer Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)
Primary focus CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, developer productivity Cloud infrastructure — compute, storage, networking, identity Reliability — SLOs, error budgets, incident response, capacity
Core tools Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible AWS / Azure / GCP, Terraform, IAM, networking Prometheus, Grafana, Kubernetes, Python/Go, chaos tools
Coding level Moderate (scripting) Moderate Higher — often Python or Go for tooling
Typical employer Product companies, IT services IT services, cloud consultancies, enterprises Large product companies, fintech, high-scale platforms
Where it starts Build/deploy automation Provisioning and managing cloud resources Monitoring, alerting, incident work
Overlap All three roles use cloud, containers and IaC. In smaller companies they are often one role.
Pick DevOps if…

You want to own the delivery pipeline

DevOps is the broadest of the three and the most common entry point in India. You work across build, deploy and run, and you are closest to the developer workflow.
Pick Cloud or SRE if…

You want to go deeper in one direction

Cloud Engineering is the right choice if you want to specialise in cloud platforms and architecture. SRE is the right choice if you enjoy measurement, reliability engineering and incident work.
