How to become a
Full Stack Developer in India.

A Full Stack Developer builds both the frontend and backend of web applications. In India, the role typically requires 6–9 months of focused learning for a fresher — covering HTML, CSS, JavaScript, a frontend framework (React), a backend runtime (Node.js, Java or Python), databases and deployment. Glassdoor reports an average base salary of ₹6L for Full Stack Developers in India (50 salaries, latest 11 Oct 2026).

Role overview

What is a Full Stack Developer?

A Full Stack Developer is a software engineer who works on both the frontend and the backend of a web application. On the frontend, they build what users see and interact with — pages, buttons, forms, dashboards. On the backend, they build the server logic, APIs, databases and authentication that power those pages. Because they understand the full flow of a request — from a button click to a database query and back — Full Stack Developers are often the generalists that small product teams rely on.

The role is not a single technology. There are three common stacks in India: MERN (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js), Java Full Stack (Java, Spring Boot, React/Angular), and Python Full Stack (Python, Django/Flask, React). Employers hire for the stack, not the title alone — which is why this guide covers all three and helps you choose.

Role Full Stack Developer
Typical entry route B.Tech / BCA / MCA / any graduate + portfolio + skills
Core skills HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Node/Java/Python, SQL, MongoDB, Git
Main tools VS Code, Git/GitHub, Postman, Docker, AWS/Vercel
Coding level Intermediate — heavy daily coding
India salary Glassdoor: avg base ₹6L, range ₹4L–₹10L, avg total ₹6.9L (50 salaries, latest 11 Oct 2026)
Related Uncodemy program Full Stack Development (MERN)
Learning time (fresher) 6–9 months of consistent study
Note on salary: The figure above is from Glassdoor (50 salaries, latest 11 Oct 2026). Indeed's national average of ₹3.71L (last updated Apr 2026) looks inconsistent with its own city figures, so we do not use it. Salaries vary by city, company, skills and experience. Uncodemy does not guarantee any salary.

Day to day

What does a Full Stack Developer do?

A typical day for a Full Stack Developer in an Indian product or services company involves a mix of coding, review and coordination. These are the tasks that come up most often.

01

Build and maintain UI components

Write React (or Angular) components, style them with CSS, wire them to APIs, and fix layout or state bugs reported by QA or users.

02

Develop backend APIs

Add or change REST endpoints in Node/Express, Spring Boot or Django — validation, business logic, database queries and error handling.

03

Design and query databases

Write SQL queries or MongoDB aggregations, add indexes, review slow queries, and manage schema changes with migrations.

04

Integrate third-party services

Connect payment gateways, email/SMS providers, auth providers (OAuth, JWT) and cloud storage into the app.

05

Code review and testing

Review pull requests from teammates, write unit tests for critical logic, and fix issues surfaced by automated tests or QA.

06

Deploy and monitor

Push builds through CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Jenkins), deploy to cloud (AWS, Vercel, Render), and check logs or metrics after a release.

07

Work with product and design

Clarify requirements, estimate tasks, and translate Figma or wireframe designs into working screens.

08

Document and hand over

Write README or API docs, and help onboard new developers onto the modules you built.

Full Stack Developers work closely with frontend developers, backend developers, QA engineers, product managers and UI/UX designers. In India, the industries hiring most actively are IT services, SaaS product companies, fintech, e-commerce, edtech and healthtech.

03

The roadmap

How to become a Full Stack Developer: step-by-step roadmap

The roadmap below is the order that works for most learners in India — frontend first, then backend, then databases and deployment, then projects. The time estimates assume 2–3 focused hours per day. If you study full-time, you can compress this; if you study only on weekends, it will take longer.

1

HTML, CSS and responsive design

Learn semantic HTML, the box model, Flexbox, Grid, media queries and mobile-first design. Build 3–4 static pages that look correct at 360px, 768px and 1440px.

4 weeks
2

JavaScript fundamentals and modern ES

Variables, functions, scope, arrays and objects, DOM manipulation, events, fetch, promises, async/await, ES6 modules. Build small interactive apps (to-do, calculator, weather widget).

6 weeks
3

Git, GitHub and the command line

Learn basic shell commands, git init/add/commit, branching, merging, pull requests, resolving conflicts and writing a good README.

1 week
4

Frontend framework — React

Components, props, state, hooks (useState, useEffect), context, routing (React Router), calling APIs, forms and controlled inputs. Rebuild one earlier project in React.

6 weeks
5

Backend — Node.js + Express, or Java + Spring Boot, or Python + Django/Flask

Pick ONE stack and go deep. Learn routing, middleware, request validation, error handling, environment variables and project structure. Build a small REST API.

8 weeks
6

Databases — SQL and MongoDB, REST APIs, authentication

Schema design, CRUD, joins (SQL), aggregation (MongoDB), indexes. Connect your API to a database, add JWT-based auth, and protect routes.

4 weeks
7

Deployment — cloud hosting, Docker basics, CI

Deploy a frontend (Vercel/Netlify) and a backend (Render/Railway/AWS EC2). Containerise one service with Docker. Set up a simple CI pipeline with GitHub Actions.

2 weeks
8

Build 3–4 full projects, DSA basics for interviews, resume

Ship full-stack projects with a live URL and a clean GitHub repo. Practise arrays, strings, objects, maps, and basic recursion. Write a one-page resume that leads with projects.

4–6 weeks
9

Apply and interview

Apply to entry-level Full Stack, Frontend and Backend roles. Prepare for DSA, JavaScript, React, backend and database interview rounds (see the interview section below).

Ongoing

Total realistic timeline for a fresher studying 2–3 hours a day: about 6–9 months. If you already know one stack, you can learn a second in 2–3 months. The single biggest predictor of getting hired is a portfolio of deployed projects — not the number of certificates.

05
Qualifications

Qualifications: degrees, non-IT graduates and certifications

Full Stack Development is one of the more accessible IT careers because employers care more about what you can build than which degree you hold. That said, some qualifications still help in India — especially for campus placements and larger companies.

Which degrees and certifications help
Qualification How much it helps Notes
B.Tech / BE (CS, IT, ECE) Strong for campus and large-company hiring Most common route for freshers at product companies.
BCA / MCA Strong for IT services and mid-size companies MCA is often treated as equivalent to B.Tech for developer roles.
B.Sc / M.Sc (CS, Maths, Stats) Moderate — depends on portfolio Portfolio and internships matter more than the degree name.
Non-IT graduates (Commerce, Arts, etc.) Possible — portfolio is decisive Build 3–4 deployed projects and expect to explain your switch in interviews.
Vendor certifications (AWS, Azure, MongoDB, Meta Front-End) Helpful add-on Use only well-known vendor certifications. Fees vary — check the vendor site.
Uncodemy Full Stack certificate Verifiable proof of training Verifiable at certificate.uncodemy.com.
06
Toolbox

Tools a Full Stack Developer uses

These are the tools you will see in most Full Stack Developer job descriptions in India. You do not need to master all of them before your first job — but you should be comfortable with the ones marked "daily".

Grouped by category
Category Tools Usage
Code editor VS Code Daily
Version control Git, GitHub / GitLab Daily
API testing Postman, Thunder Client Daily
Frontend React, Vite, Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap Daily
Backend Node.js, Express / Spring Boot / Django Daily
Databases MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB Daily
Deployment Vercel, Netlify, Render, Railway, AWS EC2 Weekly
Containers Docker, Docker Compose Weekly
CI/CD GitHub Actions, Jenkins Weekly
Monitoring CloudWatch, Sentry, Logtail As needed
07
Portfolio

Projects to build for your portfolio

Your portfolio is what gets you interviews. The five projects below cover the range of skills employers test — CRUD, auth, APIs, file uploads, payments and dashboards. Each one should be deployed with a live URL and a clean GitHub repo.

01

Task manager with authentication

Users sign up, log in and manage their own tasks. Covers auth, protected routes and per-user data.

React Node/Express MongoDB JWT
What it proves to an employer You can build a full auth flow, protect routes and handle CRUD.
02

E-commerce mini-store

Product listing, cart, checkout and order history. Add a payment gateway in test mode.

React Spring Boot MySQL Razorpay test
What it proves to an employer You can model relational data, integrate a payment gateway and handle order state.
03

Blog with rich-text editor and image upload

Author can create, edit and publish posts with images. Readers can comment.

09
Interview prep

Full Stack Developer interview questions

These are the eight questions that come up most often in entry-level Full Stack interviews in India. The answers below are short model answers — expand them with examples from your own projects.

Q1 What is the difference between frontend and backend?

Frontend is everything the user sees and interacts with in the browser — HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React. Backend is the server side — APIs, business logic, databases and authentication. In a full stack role you work on both and understand how they connect through HTTP requests.

Q2 Explain how a request flows from the browser to the database and back.

The browser sends an HTTP request to the server. The backend (e.g. Express or Spring Boot) routes it, runs business logic, queries the database (SQL or MongoDB), and returns a JSON response. The frontend receives the JSON and updates the UI.

Q3 What is the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases?

SQL databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) store data in tables with a fixed schema and support joins and transactions. NoSQL databases (MongoDB) store documents with a flexible schema and scale horizontally. SQL suits relational data; NoSQL suits fast-moving or unstructured data.

Q4 What is a REST API? Name the main HTTP methods.

A REST API is a set of HTTP endpoints that let clients read and write resources. The main methods are GET (read), POST (create), PUT/PATCH (update) and DELETE (remove). Responses are usually JSON with standard status codes like 200, 201, 400, 401, 404 and 500.

Q5 How does JWT authentication work?

The user logs in with credentials. The server verifies them and returns a signed JWT. The client stores the token and sends it in the Authorization header on later requests. The server verifies the signature on each request to identify the user without storing session state.

Q6 What is the difference between props and state in React?

Props are read-only values passed from a parent component to a child. State is data managed inside a component that can change over time and triggers a re-render when updated. Props flow down; state is local and mutable via setState or hooks.

Q7 What is Git and how do you resolve a merge conflict?

Git is a version control system that tracks changes to code. A merge conflict happens when two branches change the same lines. You open the conflicted file, choose or combine the correct lines, remove the conflict markers, then stage and commit the resolved file.

Q8 How would you optimise a slow API endpoint?

First measure where time goes — database query, business logic or network. Then add indexes on frequently queried columns, avoid N+1 queries, cache expensive results, paginate large responses and only return the fields the client needs.

10
Growth

Career path and growth

Full Stack Development is a strong starting point because it exposes you to the entire application. From here you can specialise in frontend, backend, DevOps or architecture — or move into product engineering and team leadership. Typical titles over time:

01

Intern / Trainee Full Stack Developer

0–6 months. Learning on real tasks with review from seniors.

02

Junior Full Stack Developer

0–2 years. Owns small features end-to-end with support.

03

Full Stack Developer

2–4 years. Owns modules, reviews code, mentors juniors.

04

Senior Full Stack Developer

4–7 years. Designs systems, leads features, sets standards.

05

Tech Lead / Engineering Manager

7+ years. Leads a team, owns delivery and architecture decisions.

06

Architect / Principal Engineer

8+ years. Sets technical direction across teams and products.

Many Full Stack Developers also move into DevOps, Product Management, Solutions Architecture or freelance consulting. For a DevOps-specific path, see the DevOps Engineer career guide.

11
Choose your stack

MERN vs Java full stack vs Python full stack

All three stacks have real jobs in India. The right choice depends on the kind of company you want to work for, how much time you have, and whether you prefer JavaScript across the board or a separate backend language.

Comparison — which stack to choose
Factor MERN Java Full Stack Python Full Stack
Languages JavaScript everywhere Java + JS Python + JS
Backend framework Node.js + Express Spring Boot Django / Flask
Frontend React React or Angular React
Database MongoDB (often) MySQL / PostgreSQL / Oracle PostgreSQL / MySQL
Where it's common Startups, SaaS, product companies Large enterprises, banking, IT services Data-heavy products, AI-adjacent, startups
Learning curve Easiest to start (one language) Steepest (Java + Spring ecosystem) Moderate
Job volume in India High Very high Moderate–high
Best if you… want the fastest path and like JS target banks, MNCs and enterprises already like Python or want to move toward AI
Pick MERN if…

You want the fastest route to a first job

MERN uses one language (JavaScript) across frontend and backend, so you spend your time on the stack rather than on a second language. It is the most common fresher-friendly Full Stack track in India.
Pick Java or Python if…

You are targeting a specific employer type

Java Full Stack is the safer route for large enterprises, banking and IT services. Python Full Stack is a good fit if you want to move toward data or AI later. Pick one stack — do not try to learn all three at once.
