Quick Answer

What Is Retrieval-Augmented Generation?

This page lists Uncodemy's RAG interview question PDFs, each as its own file. Retrieval-augmented generation retrieves relevant passages and gives them to a language model so its answer is grounded in your data. Interviewers test chunking, embeddings, retrieval quality, evaluation and failure handling. Sample questions with short answers are below.

A strong RAG answer explains not only how the system works, but also how you would test whether it works well.

Which RAG Concepts Should You Prepare?

What interviewers usually probe — the contents page of the RAG interview workbook.

This is an educational navigation outline. It is not a claim that every listed question appears verbatim in the downloadable PDFs.

Sample Questions

Practise the Questions That Matter

Sample interview questions written to cover common technical concepts. They are not real company interview questions, and no specific company is claimed to have asked them.

01

Explain the RAG pipeline.

Sample answer
Documents are split into chunks, converted to embeddings and stored in a vector database. At question time the query is embedded, the most similar chunks are retrieved, optionally reranked, and placed in the prompt so the model answers using them, ideally with citations.

↳ Interviewer likely to follow up: how would you test each stage?

02

How do you choose a chunk size?

Sample answer
Chunks must be large enough to hold a complete idea and small enough to be specific. Test several sizes and overlaps on your own questions and measure retrieval quality, because the best size depends on the documents.

↳ No fixed size is universally optimal — explain how you would test.

Chunking trade-offIllustrative

Very small Specific, but ideas get fragmented.
Balanced Complete idea + enough specificity. Test this.
Very large Rich context, but weaker retrieval precision.
03

What is reranking and why use it?

Sample answer
A first retrieval step returns candidates quickly; a reranker scores them again more carefully against the query so the best passages come first. It improves precision at the cost of extra latency.

↳ Always pair the benefit with the trade-off.

04

How do you evaluate a RAG system?

Sample answer
Evaluate retrieval (are the right passages returned) and generation (is the answer correct and supported by them) using a test set of questions with known answers, with metrics and human review of a sample.

↳ Keep the two stages separate in your explanation.

Retrieval

Are the right passages returned?

  • top_k choices
  • Chunking & overlap
  • Embedding selection
  • Hybrid search

Generation

Is the answer correct and supported?

  • Factual correctness
  • Evidence support
  • Unanswerable questions
  • Human review sample
05

Why might a RAG system still hallucinate?

Sample answer
Retrieval may miss the right passage, the passage may be ambiguous, or the model may add unsupported details. Reduce this by improving retrieval, instructing the model to answer only from the context and refuse otherwise, and testing for unanswerable questions.

↳ RAG reduces hallucinations; it does not eliminate them.

Failure pathsDiagnostics

  • Missing evidence — the right passage was never retrieved check recall
  • Ambiguous evidence — the passage can be read two ways check context
  • Unsupported claims — the model adds details check grounding
06

What is a security risk in RAG?

Sample answer
Retrieved documents can contain malicious instructions (prompt injection) or sensitive data that a user should not see. Treat retrieved text as untrusted and apply access control to documents.

↳ Permissions must be enforced at retrieval, not only in the UI.

Follow-up Notes

Be Ready for the Next Question

A strong response includes the definition, the reasoning behind the design decision, the trade-off it introduces, and a way to measure the result.

01

Explain the choice

State the reasoning behind your chunking strategy or retrieval method.

“Why did you choose this chunking strategy or retrieval method?”

02

Discuss the trade-off

Name what the pipeline gains and what it costs.

“What changes when you add reranking to the pipeline?”

03

Describe the measurement

Be specific about metrics, test questions and review samples.

“Which metrics or test cases would you use to evaluate the result?”

04

Explain the failure

Show a diagnostic path, not just a fix.

“What if the retrieved context did not support the answer?”

Architecture

Draw the RAG Pipeline from Memory

Preparation happens once per document set. Retrieval happens on every question. Keep the two stages visually separate when you explain them.

Preparation stage

Offline · per document
  1. Collect the source documents.
  2. Split documents into chunks.
  3. Generate embeddings for each chunk.
  4. Store vectors and associated metadata.

Query stage

Online · per question
  1. Receive the user's question.
  2. Retrieve relevant passages.
  3. Optionally rerank candidate passages.
  4. Add retrieved context to the prompt.
  5. Generate an answer grounded in that context.
Final answer

The generated response, with supporting citations or references where available. Not every RAG implementation requires the same components or the same processing order.

Evaluation

How Would You Know If Your RAG System Works?

Retrieval quality

Are the relevant passages returned?

Retrieval evaluation checks whether the system finds the passages that actually contain the answer before the model ever sees them.

  • top_k retrieval choices
  • Chunking and overlap settings
  • Embedding selection
  • Hybrid search
  • Reranking

Illustrative ranking — not a benchmark

Answer quality

Does the response follow the evidence?

Answer evaluation checks whether the generated response is correct and supported by the retrieved passages — not merely fluent.

  • Factual correctness
  • Evidence support for each claim
  • Handling of unanswerable questions
  • Human review of a representative sample

No benchmark scores are published here, and no configuration is claimed to guarantee accuracy.

Interview Coaching

Answers That Need More Than a Definition

Weak pattern

Describing only the pipeline

“Chunks go into a vector database and the model answers.”

Stronger reasoning Explain what each stage does and why it exists, then say what you would measure at that stage.

Weak pattern

Claiming RAG eliminates hallucinations

“Once you add retrieval, the model cannot hallucinate.”

Stronger reasoning RAG can provide useful evidence, but it may still fail when retrieval or generation is incorrect.

Weak pattern

Choosing chunk size without evaluation

“512 tokens is the correct chunk size.”

Stronger reasoning Chunking should be tested against your own documents and questions, then measured.

Weak pattern

Ignoring access control

“Security is handled by the model provider.”

Stronger reasoning Document permissions and retrieved sensitive information must be enforced at retrieval time.

Preparation Strategy

Prepare to Explain, Not Just Memorise

01

Build a small RAG application

Understand how ingestion, chunking, embeddings, retrieval and answer generation work together.

02

Measure retrieval quality

Prepare to explain how you would compare retrieval settings against a representative question set.

03

Investigate one failure

Be ready to describe how you would diagnose a missing passage, a wrong answer, or an unsupported claim.

04

Explain the trade-offs

Practise discussing accuracy, latency, retrieval quality, security and maintenance — and know why you would choose RAG over fine-tuning.

RAG Interview Preparation FAQ

Short answers to the questions candidates ask most often before a technical interview.

Retrieval-augmented generation retrieves relevant passages from your documents and gives them to a language model so its answer is grounded in that information.
