Managing Multiple Environments

Why Use Multiple Environments

Most projects run against more than one server - development, staging, and production being the most common. Instead of editing URLs by hand, you can create a separate environment for each and switch between them instantly.

Creating an Environment

From the Environments panel, click Add, name the environment, and define variables such as base_url or api_key with values specific to that environment.

Switching Environments

The environment selector in the top-right corner of Postman lets you pick the active environment before sending a request, so the same collection can run against any target with no edits.

Best Practices

PracticeBenefit
Use identical variable names across environmentsRequests work unchanged everywhere
Mark secrets as "secret" typeHides sensitive values in the UI
Duplicate an environment to create a new oneSaves setup time
Beyond variables and environments, Postman also supports teamwork - let's look at collaborating in shared workspaces.
