Managing Multiple Environments
Why Use Multiple Environments
Most projects run against more than one server - development, staging, and production being the most common. Instead of editing URLs by hand, you can create a separate environment for each and switch between them instantly.
Creating an Environment
From the Environments panel, click Add, name the environment, and define variables such as base_url or api_key with values specific to that environment.
Switching Environments
The environment selector in the top-right corner of Postman lets you pick the active environment before sending a request, so the same collection can run against any target with no edits.
Best Practices
| Practice | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Use identical variable names across environments | Requests work unchanged everywhere |
| Mark secrets as "secret" type | Hides sensitive values in the UI |
| Duplicate an environment to create a new one | Saves setup time |
Beyond variables and environments, Postman also supports teamwork - let's look at collaborating in shared workspaces.
