How trading charges are worked out
Each trade carries several small charges, and they all come off your profit. Net profit = (sell value − buy value) − total charges.
- Brokerage: what your broker charges, often a percentage with a flat maximum per order.
- STT: securities transaction tax, as a percentage of value.
- Exchange charge and SEBI fee: small percentages of turnover.
- Stamp duty: a percentage on the buy side.
- GST: charged on brokerage and the exchange and SEBI fees.
- DP charge: a fixed fee when delivery shares are sold.
Example with the delivery defaults: buy 100 shares at ₹500 and sell at ₹510. Turnover is ₹1,01,000 and gross profit is ₹1,000. STT is ₹101.00, exchange charge ₹3.00, SEBI fee ₹0.10, stamp duty ₹7.50, GST ₹0.56 and DP charge ₹15.00, with zero brokerage. Charges total ₹127.16, and net profit is ₹872.84. You need to sell at about ₹501.27 to break even.
These are typical values, so check your broker
All charges in this tool are typical values, not any broker's quote. Choosing a trade type loads a typical set, and you can tick Edit charges to change every one of them.
- Brokerage varies widely. Enter your broker's percentage, flat fee or both. Use 0% with a flat fee for per-order pricing.
- STT on F&O. The defaults follow the Budget 2026 increase reported from 1 April 2026: 0.05% on futures sales and 0.15% on options premium sales. Verify before relying on them.
- Exchange charges differ between NSE and BSE and can change. Stamp duty and DP charges vary too.
- Options. Enter the premium as the price. Quantity is lots × lot size.
Small charges add up with frequent trading, and intraday and options traders feel them most. Run your own numbers before assuming a small move means a profit. Holding longer? See the tax on your gain with the capital gains tax calculator. Buying the same stock in parts? The stock average calculator gives your average price. Frequently asked questions
Are these my broker's actual charges?
No. They are typical values. Tick Edit charges and enter the numbers from your broker's rate card for an accurate result.
Why is my break-even price above my buy price?
You need to earn back all the charges first. The break-even figure is approximate, as charges shift slightly with the sell price.
How do I enter an options trade?
Choose Options, enter the premium as buy and sell prices, and use lots × lot size as the quantity.
Is this tool free?
Yes. It is free, and we ask for your name and WhatsApp number once when you view your result. All other Uncodemy tools then open without the form.
