NSC Calculator: What Your Savings Certificate Will Pay

See your National Savings Certificate maturity and yearly interest.

  • 📮 7.7% default rate
  • 🔒 5-year fixed term
  • 🧾 Yearly interest table

How to use the NSC Calculator

  1. 1. Enter your amountStart at ₹1,000 and go up in multiples of ₹100.
  2. 2. Confirm the rateThe default is the Oct-Dec 2026 rate of 7.7%.
  3. 3. See your maturityGet the amount paid after 5 years and each year's interest.

How NSC maturity is calculated

An NSC runs for 5 years. Interest compounds yearly, but nothing is paid until maturity. You get it all as one amount at the end. The formula is A = P × (1 + r)^5.

Worked example: ₹1,00,000 at 7.7%. Year 1 adds ₹7,700, taking the value to ₹1,07,700. Year 2 adds 7.7% on that higher sum, about ₹8,293. After five rounds the certificate pays ₹1,44,903, so your interest is ₹44,903.

Unlike the SCSS, which pays you every quarter, NSC gives you no income along the way.

The rate you lock in

7.7% is the rate for the Oct-Dec 2026 quarter. Rates on small savings change quarterly, so a certificate bought next year may earn a different rate. Once you buy, though, your rate stays fixed for the full 5 years. That is different from PPF, where the rate can move during the term.

How tax works on NSC

Your deposit can get Section 80C benefit under the old tax regime. The interest itself is taxable. Interest for years 1 to 4 is treated as reinvested, so under the old regime it can also count for 80C, within the overall limit. Interest for year 5 has no such treatment. That is why the calculator shows the first four years separately. Ask a tax adviser about your own case. Also note that early encashment is allowed only in limited cases, so treat this as money locked for 5 years. If you want a plain compound growth view, the compound interest calculator lets you try other rates.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my money before 5 years?

Only in limited cases, such as the death of the holder or a court order. Plan as if the money is locked for the full term.

Is there a maximum NSC investment?

No upper limit applies. But 80C benefit is capped by the overall yearly limit, and only under the old tax regime.

Is the NSC rate fixed after I buy?

Yes. The rate on your purchase date holds for the full 5 years. The 7.7% default is the Oct-Dec 2026 rate, and new certificates may get a different rate next quarter.

Is the NSC calculator free?

Yes. You enter your name and WhatsApp number once to see your result, and all other Uncodemy tools then open without the form.
