  • ⚖️ Side-by-side result
  • 🧾 Cess and surcharge
  • 🎯 Break-even deductions

How to use the Old vs New Tax Regime Calculator

  1. 1. Enter your incomeType your gross salary, other income and age group.
  2. 2. Add deductionsEnter HRA exemption, 80C, 80D and other amounts you can claim.
  3. 3. CompareSee tax in both regimes, the saving and your break-even deductions.

FY 2026-27 slabs used in this calculator

Budget 2026 kept the slabs unchanged. The Income Tax Act 2025 applies from 1 April 2026.

  • New regime: nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% for ₹4-8 lakh, 10% for ₹8-12 lakh, 15% for ₹12-16 lakh, 20% for ₹16-20 lakh, 25% for ₹20-24 lakh, 30% above that. Standard deduction ₹75,000. Rebate of up to ₹60,000 means no tax up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income, with marginal relief just above it.
  • Old regime (below 60): nil up to ₹2.5 lakh, 5% up to ₹5 lakh, 20% up to ₹10 lakh, 30% above that. Standard deduction ₹50,000. Rebate of up to ₹12,500 for taxable income up to ₹5 lakh. The basic limit is ₹3 lakh from age 60 and ₹5 lakh from age 80.

Both regimes add 4% cess. Surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh: 10%, 15% and 25%, plus 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime only. The new regime stops at 25%. The tool applies marginal relief on surcharge too.

Worked example and how to read the result

Take a salary of ₹15,00,000 with ₹1,50,000 in 80C and ₹25,000 in 80D.

Old regime: taxable income is ₹12,75,000 after ₹50,000 standard deduction and ₹1,75,000 deductions. Tax is ₹1,95,000 plus ₹7,800 cess, so ₹2,02,800.

New regime: taxable income is ₹14,25,000 after ₹75,000 standard deduction. Tax is ₹93,750 plus ₹3,750 cess, so ₹97,500.

The new regime saves ₹1,05,300 here. The break-even figure is ₹5,43,750: you would need that much in old-regime deductions for the two to match.

That break-even number is the most useful output. If your real deductions are well below it, the old regime is unlikely to win. Work out HRA first with the HRA calculator, and see how EPF and NPS fit with the EPF calculator and NPS calculator. Section numbers such as 80C are the familiar old ones; the new Act renumbers them. Gains taxed at special rates are not included here, so use the capital gains tax calculator for those. This is an estimate, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

Which regime is better for me?

It depends on your deductions. Enter your real numbers. The tool shows the saving and the deductions you would need for the old regime to match the new one.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?

Yes, on taxable income. For a salaried person that means ₹12.75 lakh of salary after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief limits the tax to the amount above ₹12 lakh, before cess.

Does the tool include surcharge?

Yes. It includes 10%, 15% and 25% surcharge, plus 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime, with marginal relief. The new regime is capped at 25%.

Which deductions are allowed in the new regime?

This tool allows the standard deduction and the employer's NPS contribution. Enter the eligible amount for employer NPS, as limits differ between regimes.

Is this tax advice?

No. This is an estimate, not tax advice. Verify the current rules or ask a tax professional before you choose a regime or file.

Is this tool free?

Yes. It is free, and we ask for your name and WhatsApp number once when you view your result. All other Uncodemy tools then open without the form.
