How TDS is calculated
The basic rule is short: TDS = payment × TDS rate, if the payment crosses the limit for that type. Once it does, TDS generally applies to the whole amount, not only the part above the limit. Net payment = payment − TDS.
Example: a ₹1,00,000 professional fee, with a typical rate of 10% and a typical limit of ₹50,000. The fee is above the limit, so TDS is ₹10,000 and the net payment is ₹90,000. If no PAN is given, a higher rate applies. At the tool's 20% default, TDS becomes ₹20,000.
The table in your result runs your amount through every payment type. That is handy when you are not sure which one applies, or want to see how the type changes the deduction.
Please verify these rates and limits
The rates and limits in this tool are typical values to be verified, not an official list. They load into editable boxes, so change them to match the current rule for your case.
- Section numbers. The tool shows familiar old numbers such as 194J. The Income Tax Act 2025 renumbers TDS provisions from 1 April 2026, so forms and notices may show different references.
- Limits work in different ways. Some apply per payment, some per year and some per month. Contractor payments have both a single-payment and a yearly limit. The same payee's payments are usually added up.
- TDS is not your final tax. It is an advance. You claim credit for it in your return, and any extra is refunded after your return is processed.
- Salary is different. Salary TDS depends on your slab and regime, so use the old vs new tax regime calculator instead.
Earning FD interest? The FD calculator shows the interest. Selling shares or property? See the capital gains tax calculator. This is an estimate, not tax advice.
