Global Skills Report 2026

The job market is not shrinking — it is re-sorting around AI, data and security skills, and people who build them are paid more and hired faster. Five shifts define 2026–2030: AI skills pay an average 62% wage premium and AI jobs grow ~8x faster than the overall market (PwC, 2026); technical skills lead growth; 39% of core skills will change by 2030 and 59% of the workforce needs upskilling; entry-level jobs got harder, with 52% of new skills asked of junior hires being "senior" skills; and skills beat titles — 46% of recruiters use skills data to fill roles, while 74% of Indian recruiters say qualified talent is harder to find than ever.

01 · The Big Picture: 2025–2030

170MNew jobs created by 2030 (WEF)
92MJobs displaced by 2030 (WEF)
22%Share of current jobs disrupted (WEF)
78M netNet gain of jobs by 2030 (WEF)

Five forces reshaping jobs

Technology is the biggest force — it both creates and destroys more jobs than anything else. WEF identifies five macrotrends driving change to 2030 (WEF Jobs Outlook). Humans and machines will split work three ways: today 47% of work tasks are done mainly by humans, 22% mainly by technology and 30% by both; by 2030 employers expect a near-even split across all three.

Force Jobs created Jobs displaced What it means for you
Broadening digital access 19 million 9 million The biggest creator of jobs — digital skills are the entry ticket
AI and information processing 11 million 9 million Huge churn: AI builds new roles while replacing routine ones
Robotics and autonomous systems — net −5 million Largest net job destroyer — repetitive manual tasks at risk
Green transition (climate adaptation) net +5 million — Environmental and renewable-energy roles rising
Demographics (ageing / growing populations) 11 million + 9 million net 7 million Drives healthcare, education and care jobs
Economic uncertainty (slower growth) 2 million 3 million The only trend that destroys more jobs than it creates

02 · What Employers Are Doing About It

Skills gaps are the No.1 barrier to business transformation — cited by 63% of employers (WEF Digest). Their response tells you exactly who gets hired and who gets cut.

Employer plan to 2030 Share of employers
Prioritise upskilling their workforce 85%
Upskill workers with AI training 80%
Hire staff with new skills 70%
Hire talent with specific AI skills ~66% (two-thirds)
Reorient their business around AI 50%
Move staff from declining to growing roles 50%
Reduce staff whose skills become less relevant 40%

Read it both ways. 70% of employers will hire for new skills — and 40% will cut people whose skills go stale. The same company can be hiring and firing at once; your skills decide which list you are on.

Fastest-growing skills worldwide

AI and big data is the No.1 rising skill — 87% of employers expect demand for it to grow by 2030 (WEF via GKToday).

Rank Skill Net employers expecting growth
1 AI and big data 87%
2 Networks and cybersecurity 70%
3 Technological literacy —
4 Creative thinking —
5 Resilience, flexibility and agility —

What's rising now on LinkedIn (2026): five "skill stacks" — AI & automation, data & analytics, IT & cybersecurity, business & growth, and people & leadership. The top of the 2026 list moved from basic AI literacy to AI engineering and implementation and AI business strategy. Knowing how to use ChatGPT is now the floor, not the edge.

03 · Core Skills Employers Value Most Today

The skills employers rate essential today are mostly human thinking skills — analytical thinking leads for the third WEF edition running (HR Katha, HR Online).

Rank Core skill (2025) Employers calling it essential
1 Analytical thinking 69%
2 Resilience, flexibility and agility 67%
3 Leadership and social influence 61%
4 Creative thinking 57%
5 Motivation and self-awareness 52%
6–10 Technological literacy; empathy and active listening; curiosity and lifelong learning; talent management; service orientation and customer service ~half of employers

Fewer than half of employers rate AI and big data as a core skill today — but it is the fastest-growing skill to 2030 (Euronews). That gap is your window: learn it before it becomes a basic requirement. In Coursera's 2026 data, critical thinking and judgement are the top human skills learners are building, and critical-thinking enrollments grew 107% year over year — the fastest-growing human skill.

04 · Skills Losing Value

For the first time, a skill group is expected to shrink in demand: manual dexterity, endurance and precision, with 24% of employers expecting its importance to fall (WEF Skills Outlook).

Declining skill Why it is losing value
Manual dexterity, endurance and precision Robotics and automation take over repetitive physical tasks
Reading, writing and mathematics (basic level) Small net decline — AI handles routine drafting and calculation
Dependability and attention to detail Among the largest falls in projected demand; software checks the routine work
Sensory-processing abilities Least-cited core skill — only 6% of employers

The lesson: skills machines do well are losing value, skills that direct and check machines are gaining.

05 · Fastest-Growing and Declining Jobs

Tech roles dominate growth; routine clerical roles shrink fastest (WEF Future of Jobs 2025).

Rank Fastest-growing roles (by % growth) Fastest-declining roles
1 Big Data Specialists Postal Service Clerks
2 FinTech Engineers Bank Tellers
3 AI and Machine Learning Specialists Data Entry Clerks
4 Software and Applications Developers Cashiers and Ticket Clerks
5 Security Management Specialists Administrative Assistants and Executive Secretaries
6 Data Warehousing Specialists Printing and Related Trades Workers
7 Autonomous and Electric Vehicle Specialists Accountants and Auditors
8 UI and UX Designers Legal Secretaries
9 Light Truck / Delivery Drivers —
10 Internet of Things Specialists —

Also in WEF's top 15 growing roles: Data Analysts and Scientists, Information Security Analysts, DevOps Engineers, Environmental Engineers and Renewable Energy Engineers. The pattern: roles built on repetitive data handling are being automated, while roles that build, secure, analyse or test digital systems are growing.

06 · Largest Job Growth in Numbers

Percentage growth favours tech roles, but the biggest headcount gains come from roles at the core of every economy (WEF Jobs Outlook).

  • Farmworkers — about 35 million more jobs by 2030, the largest gain of any role.
  • Delivery drivers, construction workers, salespersons and food-processing workers — driven by digital commerce and demographics.
  • Care and education — nurses, social workers, personal care aides, and university and secondary teachers.
  • Software and applications developers, general and operations managers, and project managers — among the biggest net creators in professional work.

For IT learners, software developers appear on both lists — fastest-growing by percentage and largest-growing by numbers — the strongest demand signal in the report.

07 · AI Skills: The Biggest Salary Lever

Workers with AI skills earn an average 62% wage premium, up from 57% a year earlier, based on 1 billion+ job ads in 27 countries (PwC 2026 AI Jobs Barometer). Jobs needing AI skills grew 69% versus 9% for all jobs, and AI job numbers are nearly double 2024 levels.

  • The premium varies by sector — as high as 118% in consumer markets and as low as 16% in government (Lets Data Science).
  • AI-ready companies grow faster — the most AI-exposed firms grew headcount 52% vs 36% and wages 24% vs 17% compared with the least exposed.
  • Junior jobs are "seniorised" — AI is absorbing routine entry-level tasks, so employers now expect judgement, leadership and adaptability from freshers much earlier (PwC Australia).
  • Human skills rise with AI — PwC finds AI is increasing the value of judgement, creativity and leadership, not replacing them.

What employers expect now: use AI tools daily in your own role (prompting, AI-assisted coding, testing and analysis), plus the judgement to check AI output and explain it to stakeholders.

08 · Emerging AI Skills to Watch

The market has moved from "can you use AI?" to "can you build, connect and secure AI?" These are the AI skills gaining the most momentum in 2026.

Emerging skill What it is Growth signal
AI agents and agentic workflows AI that plans and completes multi-step tasks Agentic workflow enrollments +100% in UAE; rising globally (Zawya)
AI security Protecting AI systems, data and models from attack and misuse +358% enrollments among US learners vs +67% for AI overall (Coursera)
Prompt engineering Getting reliable output from AI tools Now rising in HR, marketing, sales and consulting in India, not just tech (afaqs)
LLMOps, AutoML, API integration, workflow automation Deploying and running AI in real products Prominent in LinkedIn's AI & automation stack for engineering and IT
LangChain and NLP Building apps on top of large language models Among India's fastest-growing skills (Free Press Journal)
Generative AI Creating text, code, images and analysis with AI Still the No. 1 AI skill learners pursue

Proof matters more than ever. AI micro-credential enrollments grew 122% year over year (Coursera via LinkedIn), and 92% of employers say entry-level hires with micro-credentials perform better in their first year (Qatar Tribune).

09 · India Spotlight

India leads the world in AI learning but trails in proven skill — the gap is the opportunity. India recorded 3.6 million GenAI course enrollments in 2025, the most of any country (Free Press Journal), yet ranked 89 of 109 countries for overall skills proficiency in Coursera's 2025 report (People Matters).

Indicator Figure Source
AI-skilled professionals India needs ~1 million by 2026 Taggd
India's AI skill deficit ~53% Taggd
Recruiters finding hiring harder 74% LinkedIn 2026
Job seekers who feel unprepared for tech change 38% People Matters
Employers planning fresher hiring, Jul–Dec 2026 75% (up from 73%) TeamLease EdTech
IT sector fresher hiring intent 76% (down from 81%) TeamLease EdTech
Projected IT hiring growth, FY27 7% Taggd
Fresher premium for AI/ML skills 25–40% over classic IT roles The Hire Hub

Fastest-growing skills in India (Coursera): LangChain, Python, cloud, NLP, AI-powered design thinking, data storytelling, data architecture and cybersecurity. On LinkedIn India, prompt engineering is now among the fastest-growing skills in HR, marketing, sales and consulting — not just tech.

The honest read: generic IT fresher hiring is softening, while demand for AI, data, cloud, cybersecurity and product engineering stays strong (AccioJob). As TeamLease puts it, the question is now which freshers get hired. Most fresher packages across sectors sit in the ₹2.5–6 LPA band (Naukri); AI and specialist skills are what lift you above it.

10 · India Job-Market Pulse 2026

Competition is fierce: 72% of Indian professionals are looking for a new role this year, 76% say the search is harder, and applicants per open role have more than doubled since early 2022 (LinkedIn via Deccan Chronicle).

Top employers for careers: Infosys, Accenture, Amazon, JPMorgan Chase and SAP lead LinkedIn's 2026 Top Companies list for India; Bengaluru and Hyderabad are the top talent hubs, with Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Chennai close behind (Outlook Business).

Non-metro cities are rising: Visakhapatnam, Ludhiana, Surat, Vadodara and Prayagraj top LinkedIn's Cities on the Rise 2026, with IT services among the top three hiring industries in all ten. Fresher hiring by city: Bengaluru 89%, Mumbai 75%, Chennai 71% employer hiring intent; e-commerce, tech start-ups and retail lead sectors at 93% (TeamLease EdTech).

Certifications employers want: AI engineering, cloud security, digital marketing analytics, VLSI chip design and good manufacturing practices.

11 · India Salary Guide by Role

Skilled tech roles pay two to three times the average Indian salary of about ₹4.5–6 LPA (GoodSpace). Figures are approximate annual CTC from salary aggregators; actual offers vary by city, company and skill depth.

Role Fresher range Market average (all levels)
Data Scientist ₹4–8 LPA ₹18 LPA
Data Engineer — ₹18 LPA
DevOps Engineer — ₹16 LPA
Full Stack Developer — ₹16 LPA
Software Engineer — ₹15 LPA
Data Analyst ₹3.5–6 LPA ₹12 LPA
Business Analyst — ₹12 LPA
QA Engineer — ₹10 LPA

Sources: averages from SalaryInHand; Data Analyst fresher range from Weekday (Oct 2026); Data Scientist fresher range from WsCube Tech, which puts mid-level at ₹8–18 LPA and senior at ₹20–30+ LPA. Freshers with demonstrated AI/ML skills command a 25–40% premium over classic IT roles (The Hire Hub), and a fresher with strong LLM project work can now out-earn a three-year traditional data scientist at the same employer (Instahyre).

12 · Global Country Rankings

Europe leads the world in building AI and human skills together; India sits in the "Competitive" tier at 40th of 98 countries on Coursera's new AI–Human Skills Synergy Index (Coursera GSR 2026). The index draws on 300 million+ Coursera and Udemy learners.

Rank Country Tier
1 Germany Leading
2 France Leading
3 Japan Leading
4 South Korea Leading
6 United Arab Emirates Leading
8 United States Leading
10 Singapore Leading
29 Indonesia Competitive
36 Malaysia Competitive
40 India Competitive

The contrast is the story: India leads the world in GenAI enrollments yet ranks 40th on applying AI with human judgement — enrolling is not the same as being job-ready.

13 · Skill-to-Career Map

Every high-growth role above maps to a learnable skill stack. Pick one row and go deep.

Skill stack Core tools to learn Roles it leads to Global growth signal
Data Analytics + GenAI Excel, SQL, Python, Power BI/Tableau, prompting Data Analyst, Business Analyst, BI Developer Data Analysts & Scientists in WEF top 15
Data Science / AI-ML Python, statistics, ML, NLP, LangChain, LLM APIs Data Scientist, ML Engineer, AI Engineer AI/ML Specialists #3 fastest-growing
Full Stack Development JavaScript, React, Node/Python, databases, AI APIs Software Developer, Full Stack Engineer Software Developers #4 fastest-growing
Automation Testing (SDET) Playwright, Selenium, API testing, CI/CD, AI test tools QA Automation Engineer, SDET Rides software and DevOps growth
Cloud & DevOps AWS/Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Linux DevOps Engineer, Cloud Engineer, SRE DevOps Engineers in WEF top 15
Cybersecurity Networking, security tools, cloud security Security Analyst, Security Engineer #2 fastest-growing skill; AI security enrollments +358% (US)
UI/UX Design Figma, user research, AI design tools UI/UX Designer, Product Designer UI/UX Designers #8 fastest-growing
Digital Marketing + AI Performance ads, analytics, prompting, visual storytelling Performance Marketer, Growth Analyst Prompt engineering & performance analysis rising in India marketing roles

Every row now expects AI fluency on top. A tester who uses AI to generate test cases, or an analyst who uses AI to speed up reporting, beats one who doesn't.

14 · Your Action Plan

The winners of 2026–2030 combine one deep technical skill, daily AI use, and visible proof of work.

Who you are What to do
Freshers and final-year students Pick one skill stack from the map above — don't spread across five. Build 2–3 real projects on GitHub or a portfolio; recruiters filter on skills, not degrees. Learn to use AI tools inside that skill (AI-assisted coding, testing or analysis). Practise problem-solving and communication — junior roles now expect "senior" skills.
Graduates and job seekers Close the gap between your degree and job descriptions: list the top 10 skills in 20 target postings and learn the missing ones. Add verifiable certifications and project links to your LinkedIn profile. Target growing roles (data, cloud, security, testing, AI) over shrinking ones (data entry, clerical).
Working professionals Add AI to your current role first — it is the fastest route to the 62% AI wage premium. Move from "AI user" to "AI implementer": automate one workflow in your team this quarter. Build leadership and stakeholder skills; AI raises their value.
Career switchers Choose a role adjacent to your experience (e.g. finance → data analytics, manual testing → automation, sales → digital marketing). Budget 4–6 months of structured, project-based learning. Use your domain knowledge as the edge — employers value people who understand both the business and the tools.

Bottom line: 39% of core skills will change by 2030. The cost of waiting is not staying still — it is falling behind people who started earlier.

15 · 90-Day Skill-Building Roadmap

Ninety focused days is enough to go from "interested" to "interview-ready" in one skill stack, if you build proof as you learn.

Phase Weeks Focus Output to show
Foundation 1–4 Core tool of your chosen stack (SQL/Python, JavaScript, Playwright, AWS, Figma) + daily AI-tool practice Notes, small exercises, GitHub account active
Build 5–8 Two guided projects using real-world data or apps; use AI to speed up, then explain every line yourself 2 projects with README files
Prove 9–12 One independent capstone, a certification, mock interviews, LinkedIn profile with skills and project links Portfolio, certificate, 20+ applications

Daily habits that compound: 2 hours of hands-on practice, not just videos; 15 minutes using an AI tool on a real task in your skill; one LinkedIn post or GitHub commit a week — visible learning gets noticed by recruiters who search by skills.

16 · Myths vs Facts

Myth Fact
"AI will take all the jobs." WEF projects a net gain of 78 million jobs by 2030; AI is expected to create 11 million and displace 9 million.
"A degree is enough to get hired." 46% of recruiters globally filter by skills data, and India ranks 89th of 109 for skills proficiency — degrees without skills are not landing jobs.
"I just need to know ChatGPT." Basic AI literacy is now the floor; the 2026 premium goes to people who implement and apply AI in their role.
"IT jobs are finished." IT fresher hiring intent dipped to 76%, but IT hiring is projected to grow 7% in FY27, and AI, cloud, data and security roles are in short supply.
"Soft skills don't matter in tech." Analytical thinking (69%) and resilience (67%) top employers' core-skill list, and PwC finds AI is raising the value of judgement and leadership.
"It's too late to switch careers." 85% of employers plan to upskill staff and 50% plan to move people into growing roles — reskilling is the norm, not the exception.
