Fraction Calculator: Exact Answers in Lowest Terms

Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers.

  • ➗ All four operations
  • 🔢 Mixed numbers
  • ✅ Lowest terms

How to use the Fraction Calculator

  1. 1. Type two fractionsUse forms like 3/4, 1 1/2, 2 or 0.25.
  2. 2. Choose an operationPick add, subtract, multiply or divide.
  3. 3. See the answerGet lowest terms, a mixed number and a decimal.

How each operation works

  • Add: a/b + c/d = (a × d + c × b) ÷ (b × d).
  • Subtract: the same, with a minus in the middle.
  • Multiply: multiply the tops and multiply the bottoms.
  • Divide: flip the second fraction, then multiply.

Then divide the top and bottom by their highest common factor to reach lowest terms.

Worked example

Take 3/4 + 5/6. The top becomes 3 × 6 + 5 × 4 = 38. The bottom becomes 4 × 6 = 24. So the sum is 38/24.

The highest common factor of 38 and 24 is 2, so the answer is 19/12. As a mixed number that is 1 7/12. As a decimal it is about 1.58333333.

Here is a division example: 1 1/2 ÷ 3/4. Turn the mixed number into 3/2, then flip and multiply: 3/2 × 4/3 = 2.

Tips for entering numbers

For a mixed number, put a space between the whole number and the fraction, as in 2 1/4. A minus sign at the front applies to the whole value, so −1 1/2 means −3/2. Decimals are turned into exact fractions, so 0.25 becomes 1/4.

The bottom number cannot be 0, and you cannot divide by a fraction equal to 0. The tool works with whole numbers throughout, so the fraction answer is exact. The decimal is rounded.

Finding a common denominator by hand? The LCM and HCF calculator helps. For longer sums, use the scientific calculator.
