How the conversion works
Most units convert by a fixed factor. The tool turns your value into a base unit, then into the target: result = value × from factor ÷ to factor.
Here is a worked example with 10 feet to metres. One foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so 10 × 0.3048 = 3.048 m. Other handy facts: 100 km/h is about 62.14 mph, and one acre is 43,560 square feet.
Temperature is the exception, because the scales have different zero points. °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and K = °C + 273.15. So 100 °C is 212 °F. The tool stops you at absolute zero, since nothing can be colder.
Units that often confuse people
- KB and KiB. 1 KB is 1,000 bytes, while 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes. Storage makers use the first, and computers often report the second. That is why a new drive can look smaller than the box says.
- US and UK gallons. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres. A UK gallon is about 4.546 litres.
- Month and year. The tool uses a year of 365.25 days and an average month of one twelfth of that.
- Bigha and gaj. Local land units vary by state, so they are not included. Convert from a known figure in square feet.
