Number to Words: Lakh, Crore, Million and Rupee Wording

Write any number in words, the Indian way, the international way and in rupees.

  • 🇮🇳 Lakh and crore
  • 🌍 Million and billion
  • 🧾 Rupees and paise

How to use the Number to Words Converter

  1. 1. Type your numberEnter digits. Commas and a decimal point are fine.
  2. 2. Press ConvertAll three versions appear together.
  3. 3. Copy what you needThe Copy button gives you the rupee wording.

Indian and international number systems

The Indian system groups digits after the first thousand in twos: 1,00,000 is one lakh and 1,00,00,000 is one crore. The international system groups them in threes: 1,000,000 is one million and 1,000,000,000 is one billion.

So one million equals 10 lakh, and one billion equals 100 crore.

Here is a worked example with 1234567. In the Indian system it is twelve lakh thirty four thousand five hundred sixty seven. In the international system it is one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven.

Rupee wording for cheques

The rupee line uses Indian grouping and ends with Only, the usual style on a cheque. For example, 1250.75 becomes Rupees One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty And Seventy Five Paise Only.

Amounts are rounded to two decimal places. So 1.999 reads as Rupees Two Only. A value of 0.50 reads as Fifty Paise Only.

Check the digits and the words against each other before you sign a cheque. They must match.

Very large numbers

The tool accepts up to 30 digits before the decimal point and works on the digits directly, so nothing is lost to rounding. Above 99 crore, it counts in crores: 1000000000 is one hundred crore, and 1000000000000 is one lakh crore. This is the wording you see in Indian news and budget reports.

Digits after a decimal point are read one at a time, so 12.05 is twelve point zero five.
