How a lumpsum grows
A lumpsum is one investment that stays put. So the formula has only one deposit to track: A = P × (1 + r)^t, with r as the yearly return. This tool compounds yearly, because the expected return of a fund is normally stated as a yearly average. That is different from our SIP tools, which use monthly steps.
Worked example: ₹1,00,000 for 10 years at 12% a year. A = 1,00,000 × 1.12^10 = ₹3,10,585. That is a gain of ₹2,10,585, or a little over 3 times your money.
The number that matters: today's money
₹3,10,585 in ten years will not buy what it buys today. At an assumed inflation of 6%, it is worth about ₹1,73,429 in today's money. So your real gain is far smaller than the headline. Always look at both figures. The inflation calculator covers this in more detail.
Use this as an estimate, not a forecast
The 12% and 6% here are example inputs, not predictions. Markets rise and fall, and no return is promised. A one-time investment made just before a fall feels very different from a smooth line in a table. Try a lower return as well, such as 8%, and see whether your plan still works.
Tax and fund costs also reduce what you keep, and they are not included here.
Not sure whether to invest all at once? If you are investing from monthly income, the step-up SIP calculator is a better fit. To check what an old investment really returned, use the CAGR calculator. If you want a fixed return instead, try the FD calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What return should I enter?
There is no right answer, since returns are not guaranteed. Try a few values to see a range of outcomes, and treat each one as an estimate.
Why is the compounding yearly here but monthly in SIP tools?
A single sum needs only one yearly growth rate. SIP tools use monthly steps because the money goes in each month.
Does this include tax or fund charges?
No. It shows growth before tax and costs. Your actual amount can be lower.
Is the lumpsum calculator free?
Yes. You enter your name and WhatsApp number once to see your result, and all other Uncodemy tools then open without the form.
