Text Compare: See Exactly What Changed

Paste two versions and see every added and removed word in colour.

  • 🔍 Line and word view
  • 🎨 Colour highlights
  • 🔒 Stays in your browser

How to use the Text Compare

  1. 1. Paste both versionsPut the original on one side and the changed text on the other.
  2. 2. Choose the viewCompare line by line, or word by word for flowing text.
  3. 3. Read the highlightsRed was removed and green was added.

How the comparison works

The tool uses the longest common subsequence method, the same idea behind many code comparison tools. It finds the largest set of lines or words that appear in the same order in both texts. Everything else is marked as removed or added, so the result shows the fewest changes needed to turn one version into the other.

In line view, a changed line is shown as a pair, with the exact changed words highlighted inside it. This matters when a single word has moved or a long paragraph has one small edit that is easy to miss by eye.

Line view or word view?

  • Line by line suits code, lists, data and anything with a clear line structure.
  • Word by word suits essays, letters and contracts, where one paragraph may be a single long line.
  • Ignore upper and lower case helps when only the capital letters changed.
  • Ignore extra spaces hides differences in spacing and indentation.

Everyday uses

Check what a colleague changed in a shared document. Compare two versions of an offer letter before you sign. Find a small change in a configuration file that broke something. Testers can compare expected and actual output, and students can see what an editor changed in their work.

Your text is compared in your browser and is not uploaded, which makes this safer for private documents. Very long texts may be too large for the browser to compare, and the tool will tell you if so. Fix styling first with the case converter, or count the final version with the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compare code with this tool?

Yes. Use line view for code. Your code is shown as plain text and is never run.

Is it a plagiarism checker?

No. It only compares the two texts you paste. It does not search the internet or other documents.

Why does a whole line show as changed?

If a line changes a lot, it appears as one removed and one added line. Highlights inside show the exact words.

Is this tool free?

Yes. You enter your name and WhatsApp number once when you see your first result, and all other Uncodemy tools then open without the form.
