Azure Event Hubs vs Azure Service Bus
Azure Event Hubs and Azure Service Bus are both messaging services on Azure, but they're designed for very different scenarios — one for high-throughput event streaming, the other for reliable enterprise messaging.
Azure Event Hubs
- Built for ingesting massive volumes of events — millions per second
- Optimized for telemetry, logs, and streaming analytics scenarios
- Uses a partitioned log model, similar to Apache Kafka
- Events are retained for a configurable period and can be replayed
Azure Service Bus
- Built for reliable, transactional enterprise messaging
- Supports queues (point-to-point) and topics (publish-subscribe)
- Offers advanced features like sessions, dead-lettering, and duplicate detection
- Better suited for business workflows that need guaranteed, ordered processing
Key Differences
- Throughput — Event Hubs handles far higher event volumes than Service Bus
- Message model — Event Hubs is stream-based; Service Bus is message/queue-based
- Use case — Event Hubs suits telemetry and analytics; Service Bus suits business transactions
- Message lifetime — Event Hubs retains a stream for replay; Service Bus removes messages once processed
