Azure Solution Architect Certification Path - A Complete Roadmap

The Azure Solutions Architect path is designed for professionals who design cloud solutions spanning compute, networking, storage, and security. Here's how the certification path is structured.

Step 1: Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)

This is the recommended entry point, covering core cloud concepts, Azure services, pricing, and governance. It isn't a prerequisite, but it builds the vocabulary the rest of the path assumes.

Step 2: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)

AZ-104 is a prerequisite for the Solutions Architect Expert certification. It focuses on hands-on management of Azure resources — VMs, storage, networking, and identity — which gives architects practical grounding before they design at a higher level.

Step 3: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305)

AZ-305 is the core exam for this path, testing the ability to design solutions for identity, governance, monitoring, business continuity, data storage, business applications, and infrastructure. It requires passing AZ-104 first.

Key Skill Areas Tested

  • Designing for identity, governance, and monitoring
  • Designing data storage solutions for relational and non-relational data
  • Designing business continuity and disaster recovery solutions
  • Designing infrastructure solutions for compute and networking

Step 4: Build Real-World Architecture Experience

Certifications validate knowledge, but architecture roles expect experience with trade-off decisions — choosing between PaaS and IaaS, designing for multi-region resilience, and balancing cost against redundancy. Practice designing systems end-to-end, not just naming services.

Optional Specializations

  • DP-203 (Data Engineering) for architects focused on data platforms
  • AZ-500 (Security Engineer) for architects specializing in security design
  • AZ-400 (DevOps Engineer Expert) for architects working closely with CI/CD pipelines
AZ-305 exam questions are scenario-heavy — expect to be given business requirements and asked to choose the most appropriate architecture, not just recall service names.
