Microsoft Azure Certification Exams: Role-based Paths
Microsoft structures most of its Azure certifications around specific job roles, making it easier to choose a certification path that matches your career direction.
Administrator Path
- Starts with Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)
- Leads to Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)
- Suited for professionals managing day-to-day cloud infrastructure
Developer Path
- Leads to Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204)
- Suited for software engineers building cloud-native applications
Data Engineer and Data Scientist Paths
- Data Engineer Associate (DP-203) for building data pipelines and platforms
- Data Scientist Associate (DP-100) for building and deploying ML models
Security Engineer Path
- Leads to Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500)
- Suited for professionals focused on securing cloud infrastructure
Solutions Architect and DevOps Engineer Paths
- Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) — for designing enterprise cloud architecture
- DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) — for professionals combining development and operations practices
Choosing a role-based path first, rather than collecting certifications at random, helps ensure your learning stays focused and directly useful for the job you actually want.
