Permalinks and Media Management
Why Clean URLs Matter
A permalink is the permanent URL for a post or page. Choosing a clean, readable permalink structure improves both user experience and SEO.
Setting a Permalink Structure
- Go to Settings > Permalinks to choose a URL format, such as Post Name, which produces short, descriptive URLs.
- Avoid the default numeric structure, since it gives search engines and visitors no context about the page's content.
- Set your permalink structure early, since changing it later can break existing links unless redirects are set up.
Managing the Media Library
The Media Library stores every image, video, and file uploaded to your site, and can be found under the Media menu.
Always add descriptive file names and alt text to images to improve accessibility and SEO.
Compress large images before uploading to keep your site loading quickly.
| Permalink Structure | Example URL | SEO Friendliness |
|---|---|---|
| Plain (default) | ?p=123 | Poor |
| Post name | /permalink-structure/ | Excellent |
| Day and name | /2026/07/18/permalink-structure/ | Good |
With clean URLs and organised media in place, you're ready to extend your site further using themes and plugins.
