How it works, and the one download
This tool uses Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine, compiled to run inside your browser. Your image is read on your own device and is never sent anywhere.
The engine does need language data to recognise letters. The first time you use a language, your browser downloads that data from a public CDN (jsDelivr). It then keeps a copy, so later runs are faster. That download only fetches the language file and does not include anything from your image. Expect the first run to take a while on slow mobile data. English + Hindi downloads both languages, so pick one if your image has only one.
Accuracy depends on your image
OCR is not perfect, and the result depends heavily on what you give it.
- Works well: printed text, screenshots, sharp scans, dark text on a light background.
- Works poorly: blurry photos, shadows, slanted pages, decorative fonts, text over pictures.
- Handwriting: results are often unreliable.
Crop to the text and photograph straight on for better results. Always proofread names, numbers and dates, because OCR can confuse similar letters and digits.
Have a scanned PDF? Convert it with PDF to JPG at 300 DPI first. If your PDF has selectable text, PDF to Word is faster and exact.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded for OCR?
No. Text is read in your browser. Only the language data is downloaded, once, from a public CDN. Your image stays on your device.
Can it read Hindi?
Yes. Choose Hindi, or English + Hindi for mixed text. Accuracy depends on how clear the image is.
Why was the first run slow?
Your browser had to download language data and the OCR engine. Later runs are quicker.
Is it free?
Yes. We ask for your name and WhatsApp number once at result time. Other Uncodemy tools then open without the form.
