Creating Power BI Reports

Once data is loaded and modeled, the next step is turning it into a report - a set of interactive pages built on the Power BI Desktop canvas.

Core Building Blocks

  • Canvas - the blank workspace in the center where visuals are arranged.
  • Fields pane - lists every table and column available in the data model.
  • Visualizations pane - the gallery of chart types plus formatting controls for the selected visual.
  • Filters pane - controls what data reaches the visuals, the page, or the whole report.

Steps to Build a Basic Report

1. Click a visual type in the Visualizations pane
2. Drag fields onto the visual's Axis, Legend, and Values wells
3. Resize and position the visual on the canvas
4. Repeat for additional visuals, then arrange them into a layout
5. Rename the page tab and save the .pbix file

Good Practices

  • Start with the key metric or KPI card before adding supporting charts.
  • Group related visuals together so the page tells a clear story.
  • Use consistent colors and fonts across all visuals on a page.
A report is easiest to build when the underlying data model is already clean - most of the "hard work" in Power BI happens before a single visual is dropped on the canvas.
