Tableau Sorting

Sorting in Tableau reorders how dimension members appear in a view, making comparisons and rankings easier to read at a glance.

Quick Sort

Hovering over an axis reveals small sort icons that instantly sort the view ascending or descending by the measure being displayed.

Sorting from the Toolbar

Select the field header -> click the ascending/descending sort icon in the toolbar

Manual Sorting

Right-click a dimension field and choose Sort to set a custom order - by a specific measure, alphabetically, or by manually dragging members into any order you like.

Nested Sorting

When multiple dimensions are on the same shelf, Tableau can sort within each nested group separately, which is useful for showing top items within each category.

Sorting doesn't change the underlying data - it only changes the display order in the current view, so different sheets built from the same data source can be sorted independently.
