Pivot Charts

A Pivot Chart is a chart linked directly to a Pivot Table, letting you visualize summarized data and interactively filter it the same way you would filter the table itself.

Creating a Pivot Chart

Click inside an existing Pivot Table -> Insert tab -> PivotChart -> choose chart type

Excel can also create both a Pivot Table and Pivot Chart together directly from raw data using Insert > PivotChart.

Interactive Filtering

Pivot Charts come with built-in field buttons that let viewers filter the chart directly - for example, clicking a legend field to show or hide specific categories.

Choosing a Chart Type

  • Column/Bar - comparing totals across categories.
  • Line - showing trends over time.
  • Pie - showing proportion of a whole (best with few categories).

Updating the Chart

Because a Pivot Chart is tied to its Pivot Table, refreshing the table (Data > Refresh All) also updates the chart automatically.

Pivot Charts are ideal for dashboards where the underlying data changes regularly, since both the summary and the visual update together with a single refresh.
