Power BI Installation

Power BI Desktop is free to download and is the primary tool for building reports before publishing them to Power BI Service.

System Requirements

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit).
  • At least 4 GB of RAM (8 GB or more recommended for larger datasets).
  • .NET Framework, installed automatically if missing.

Installation Steps

1. Go to the official Power BI Desktop download page
2. Download the installer (or get it from the Microsoft Store)
3. Run the installer and follow the setup wizard
4. Launch Power BI Desktop and sign in with a Microsoft account

Two Installation Options

  • Microsoft Store version - updates automatically alongside Windows.
  • Standalone .exe installer - useful in managed corporate environments where Store access is restricted.
Power BI Desktop only runs on Windows - macOS and Linux users typically use a virtual machine or access reports through the web-based Power BI Service instead.
