Tableau Filters
Filters control which data appears in a Tableau view, letting you focus analysis on a specific subset without altering the underlying data source.
Adding a Filter
Drag a field to the Filters shelf -> choose the filter conditionTypes of Filters
- Dimension Filters - include or exclude specific category values (e.g. only "Noida" and "Delhi").
- Measure Filters - restrict based on a numeric range or aggregation (e.g. Sales > 1000).
- Date Filters - filter by a relative or fixed date range.
- Top N Filters - show only the top or bottom N members ranked by a measure.
Interactive Filters
Right-click a filter on the Filters shelf and choose Show Filter to turn it into an on-screen control that viewers can adjust directly on a dashboard.
Filter Order
Tableau applies filters in a specific order - extract filters, then data source filters, then context filters, and finally dimension and measure filters - which matters when filters depend on one another.
If a filter doesn't seem to be working as expected, checking the filter order is often the fastest way to find the issue - a later filter may be operating on data already narrowed by an earlier one.
