Tableau Maps

Tableau automatically recognizes geographic fields - like Country, State, or City - and can plot them on a map without any manual setup.

Building a Basic Map

Double-click a geographic field (e.g. City)
Tableau automatically generates latitude and longitude and plots a map

Assigning Geographic Roles

If a field isn't recognized automatically, its geographic role can be set manually.

Right-click the field -> Geographic Role -> choose the correct type (City, State, Country, etc.)

Filled Maps vs Symbol Maps

• Symbol Map - places a mark (circle, size, or color-coded) at each location's point.
• Filled Map - shades entire geographic regions (like states or countries) based on a measure.

Custom Territories

Individual locations can be grouped into custom regions using groups, letting you build sales territories or custom zones that don't match standard geographic boundaries.
