Tableau Dashboards

A dashboard combines multiple worksheets, filters, and interactive elements into a single screen, giving viewers a complete picture of the data at once.

Creating a Dashboard

Dashboard menu -> New Dashboard
Drag existing sheets from the sidebar onto the canvas

Layout Containers

  • Horizontal Container - arranges objects side by side.
  • Vertical Container - stacks objects on top of each other.
  • Floating Objects - freely positioned elements, useful for titles or legends layered over charts.

Adding Interactivity

Dashboards become interactive through Filter Actions, Highlight Actions, and shared filters/parameters, letting one click update multiple sheets on the same screen at once.

Device-Specific Layouts

Dashboard pane -> Device Layouts -> Desktop / Tablet / Phone

Tableau lets you design a separate layout optimized for each device size, ensuring the dashboard remains usable on smaller screens.

A focused dashboard with three or four well-chosen charts is usually more effective than one crammed with every possible view - dashboards are meant to answer specific questions quickly, not display everything at once.
