Walkthrough

What is a Walkthrough?

A walkthrough is an informal review in which the author presents and explains the work product step-by-step to a group of colleagues who ask questions and offer suggestions.

Key Characteristics

  • Primarily led and driven by the author, unlike an inspection which is led by a moderator.
  • Has no strict entry/exit criteria — it is more relaxed and flexible.
  • Useful for knowledge sharing and gathering early feedback from peers.
  • Can involve stakeholders who are not deeply technical, such as business analysts or customers.

When to Use a Walkthrough

Walkthroughs are ideal in the early stages of a project, such as reviewing requirements or design documents, when the goal is to build shared understanding rather than perform a rigorous defect hunt.
