Event 2: Sprint Planning

Purpose

Sprint Planning kicks off the Sprint. The whole Scrum Team collaborates to answer two questions: what can be delivered in this Sprint, and how will the chosen work get done?

What Happens

  • The Product Owner presents the highest-priority items from the Product Backlog.
  • The Development Team assesses capacity and selects items it believes it can complete.
  • The team crafts a Sprint Goal—a short statement summarizing the objective of the Sprint.
  • The selected items are broken down into tasks, forming the Sprint Backlog.

Outcome

By the end of Sprint Planning, the team has a clear Sprint Goal and a Sprint Backlog detailed enough to start work immediately, typically time-boxed to about two hours per week of Sprint length.
