Scrum Roles

The Three Scrum Roles

Scrum defines exactly three accountabilities, deliberately kept small to avoid the confusion that comes from too many specialized titles.

Product Owner

Owns the Product Backlog and is responsible for maximizing the value of the product. The Product Owner prioritizes backlog items, clarifies requirements for the team, and represents the voice of the customer/stakeholders.

Scrum Master

A servant-leader who ensures the team understands and follows Scrum practices, removes impediments that block progress, shields the team from outside interruptions, and coaches the organization on adopting Agile.

Development Team

The cross-functional group of people who actually build the increment—developers, testers, designers, and anyone else needed to turn backlog items into working software. The team is self-organizing and collectively responsible for the quality of the work.
