What is Backlog Grooming (Refinement)?

Backlog grooming, also called backlog refinement, is the ongoing activity of reviewing and updating items in the Product Backlog to keep them clear, properly ordered, and ready for future Sprints.

Typical Activities

• Breaking large backlog items (epics) into smaller, sprint-sized stories.
• Adding or clarifying acceptance criteria and details.
• Re-estimating effort as more is learned about an item.
• Re-ordering items based on changing priorities or new information.
• Removing items that are no longer relevant.

Who is Involved

The Product Owner drives grooming but the Development Team actively participates, since developers and testers are best placed to estimate effort and spot missing details.

Why It Matters

Well-groomed backlog items make Sprint Planning faster and more accurate, and they reduce mid-Sprint surprises caused by unclear requirements.
