Artifact 5: Monitoring Progress toward a Goal

Product Goal

The Product Goal describes a future state of the product that serves as a long-term target for the Scrum Team, giving the Product Backlog a clear objective to work toward.

Tracking Techniques

  • Release Burnup Chart: shows total scope alongside cumulative work completed over multiple Sprints, making progress toward the Product Goal visible.
  • Roadmaps: plot major themes or releases against time to show the intended path toward the goal.

Why It Matters

Monitoring overall progress lets the Product Owner and stakeholders decide whether the current trajectory will meet the Product Goal, or whether scope, timeline, or priorities need to change.
